Fortnite Save the World just went free-to-play after nine years as a paid mode, and Epic Games is marking the occasion with a genuinely good reward: the Jess outfit, available at no cost to any player who puts in the work. The catch is a hard deadline tied to the start of Chapter 7 Season 3, so the clock is already running. Here's everything you need to know to grab the skin before it's gone.
How do you unlock the Jess skin for free?
The requirement is straightforward: earn 350,000 XP inside Save the World mode. That XP milestone is the only way to claim the Jess Outfit, and it must be completed before June 5, 2026, when Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 launches and the crossover event ends, according to the official Epic Games blog.
One thing worth flagging immediately: XP earned in Battle Royale does not count toward this milestone. Every point needs to come from Save the World itself, so don't expect your regular BR sessions to move the bar.
danger
The Jess skin is not available in the Item Shop. There is currently no way to buy it. Earn it through Save the World or miss it entirely.
Since Save the World is now free-to-play as of April 16, 2026, any Fortnite account can jump in without spending a thing. There's no paywall blocking you from starting.
What's the fastest way to earn XP in Save the World?
Save the World offers several reliable XP sources you'll want to cycle through efficiently:
- Missions: The core activity. Higher-difficulty missions award more XP per run, so push into zones above your comfort level where possible.
- Storm Shield Defense missions: These tend to offer solid XP chunks and are worth prioritizing early.
- Daily Quests: Complete these every day without fail. They reset regularly and stack up fast over the weeks you have before the deadline.
The sources also note that enabling the Auto-Level feature in settings keeps your heroes scaled to tougher missions automatically, which means you won't get stuck grinding low-XP content because your loadout is underleveled.

Turn on Auto-Level in Save the World settings before you start grinding. It scales your heroes to higher-difficulty missions and keeps your XP gains per run as high as possible.

What other rewards come from the crossover?
The Jess skin isn't the only thing on the table. The Battle Royale and Save the World crossover includes a Working with Jess questline on the Chapter 7 Season 2 map. Completing two of Jess's quests during a BR match lets you purchase the Super Shredder weapon mid-game.
Finish both the Working with Jess and Working with Penny questlines entirely, and you'll unlock the Super Shredder Schematic for permanent use back in Save the World mode. That's a meaningful reward for players who plan to stick around in the mode after the crossover ends.
Completing these Battle Royale questlines also generates extra XP toward your Showdown Battle Pass levels, so the two modes feed into each other even if BR XP doesn't count toward the Jess skin specifically.
Can you buy the Jess skin later?
As of now, no. The Jess skin is not purchasable in the Item Shop. However, Insider Gaming notes that Fortnite updated its exclusivity rules back in August 2024, meaning Battle Pass items can return to the shop after 18 months or more. That same policy doesn't automatically apply to free event rewards like this one, but it does suggest Epic is more open to re-releasing cosmetics than it used to be.
The safe play is to earn it now. Counting on a future re-release is a gamble that may not pay off.
warning
Don't assume the Jess skin will return. Earn the 350,000 XP before June 5 to guarantee you get it. Waiting is a risk with no upside.
