Fortnite Season 3: How to Get and Use the Sprite Locator

The Sprite Locator is one of the most useful tools in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3, but it sits behind a wall that most players never reach. Once you have it, tracking down buried Sprite Chests becomes a straightforward process instead of a guessing game across the map. Here's exactly what you need to do to unlock it and get the most out of it.

How do you unlock the Sprite Locator?

The Sprite Locator is tied directly to the Sprite Mastery system, so you cannot buy it, find it in a chest, or pick it up from a fallen player. The unlock condition is specific: you need to reach level 5 mastery with at least 17 different Sprites. That means bringing 17 separate Sprites to their max mastery level, which requires consistent extraction runs over multiple matches.

Once you hit that threshold, 3 Sprite Locators drop directly into your inventory. They are account-bound, meaning no other player can pick them up, and you bring them into your runs as consumables.

If the grind feels slow, Quack Snacks can speed things up. Spending 1,500 gold on a Quack Snack during a run grants a Sprite 1 level plus 1 additional level, which compresses the mastery grind noticeably. Stacking these across multiple Sprites is the fastest realistic path to the 17-Sprite requirement.

tip
Prioritize Sprites you already have at mid-level mastery. Getting several to max faster than grinding new ones from zero is almost always the better call.

For a full breakdown of every Sprite type available this season and where to find them, the Fortnite Sprite abilities guide covers all the details.

How do you use the Sprite Locator in a match?

Once you load into a run with a Sprite Locator in your inventory, open your Gizmo Wheel. The Sprite Locator replaces your pickaxe slot on the left side of the wheel. Select it, activate it, and it immediately begins scanning for the nearest buried Sprite Chest.

After activation, a marker appears on your screen pointing to the exact location of a buried Sprite Chest. The chest location is exclusive to your session, so other players will not see the same marker. When you reach the marked location, you will also see a hologram image of the Sprite inside the chest before you dig it up. That preview matters: if the Sprite inside is one you already have at max mastery, you can skip the chest entirely and save your time for a more valuable target.

warning
If you get eliminated before extracting the Sprite from the chest, you lose both the Sprite Locator and any Sprite you obtained. Always extract successfully before the match ends or you leave the area.

The extraction step is non-negotiable for adding the Sprite to your collection. Opening the chest is not enough on its own.

What's the best way to manage your Sprite Locators?

You only receive 3 Sprite Locators when you hit the Mastery Rank requirement, so treating them as disposable is a mistake. Use them in matches where you feel confident about surviving long enough to extract. Dropping into a hot zone and immediately popping a Sprite Locator is a reliable way to lose it for nothing.

tip
The hologram preview inside the chest tells you which Sprite is waiting. If it's a type you still need for mastery, that chest is worth prioritizing. If you've already maxed that Sprite, move on.

Tips for reaching the 17-Sprite mastery requirement faster

The unlock condition is the real barrier here, not the tool itself. A few approaches make the grind more manageable:

  • Use Quack Snacks every run. The 1,500 gold cost is steep but the 2-level jump per use adds up fast across a full session.
  • Spread mastery across multiple Sprites at once. Focusing entirely on one Sprite at a time is slower than leveling several in parallel.
  • Know where Sprite Chests spawn. Consistent chest locations mean consistent Sprite access.
  • Extract, don't just collect. The mastery system requires successful extraction. Picking up a Sprite and dying before extracting does not count toward your progress.

The Sprite Locator turns a frustrating search into a targeted objective. Getting there takes real investment in the mastery system, but once you have those 3 Locators, every run with one active becomes significantly more productive.
