Honkai Star Rail tier list 1.0 [May ...

The Honkai: Star Rail character roster has grown to over 90 playable characters as of version 4.2, and picking the right ones for your team makes a real difference in endgame content. This guide breaks down the current community consensus tier list, explains what separates the top performers from the rest, and helps you figure out who to pull for next.

What makes a character S tier in Honkai: Star Rail?

S tier in Honkai: Star Rail is not just about raw damage numbers. The characters sitting at the top of community rankings earn their spots through a combination of team flexibility, consistent output across different content types, and the ability to enable other strong units. Based on aggregated community data from 768 submitted tier lists, the current S tier is notably large, reflecting how the game's power creep has pushed several characters into genuinely top-level territory.

S tier character rankings

S tier character rankings

The top S tier characters, according to community voting, include The Herta, Phainon, Anaxa, Cipher, Robin, Acheron, Ruan Mei, Castorice, Kafka, Sunday, Aventurine, Hyacine, Fugue, Aglaea, Firefly, Mydei, Feixiao, Black Swan, Jingliu, Sparkle, Tribbie, Jing Yuan, Bronya, Himeko, Topaz and Numby, Lingsha, Blade, Silver Wolf, Boothill, and Seele.

That is a long list, but the key observation here is that supports and sustains appear right alongside damage dealers. Robin, Ruan Mei, Sunday, and Aventurine are all S tier despite not being primary damage sources. That tells you something important about how the game rewards team-building over individual character strength.

S tier breakdown: who actually tops the rankings?

Among S tier characters, community consensus places The Herta, Phainon, and Anaxa at the very top. These are the newest and most powerful additions to the roster, reflecting the game's ongoing power scaling through versions 4.1 and 4.2.

Acheron remains one of the most respected damage dealers in the game, consistently appearing near the top of community rankings despite being an older 5-star. Her sustained relevance is a product of strong kit design rather than recency.

Firefly and Lingsha represent the break-focused archetype that dominated the meta for several versions. Both remain S tier, though the arrival of newer units has given players more viable alternatives.

Robin and Ruan Mei are arguably the most universally useful supports in the game. Both can slot into almost any team composition and immediately improve performance. If you are deciding between pulling a new damage dealer or one of these two, the supports often provide more long-term value.

How does A tier compare to S tier?

A tier characters are genuinely strong and fully capable of clearing endgame content. The gap between A tier and S tier is smaller than the tier labels suggest. Based on community data, A tier includes Jade, Jiaoqiu, Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae, Cerydra, Hysilens, Argenti, Dr. Ratio, Rappa, Luocha, Fu Xuan, Serval, Huohuo, Welt, Gallagher, March 7th (both versions), Hanya, Tingyun, Yukong, Yunli, Asta, Clara, Dan Heng, Natasha, Gepard, Qingque, Guinaifen, Moze, Herta, Xueyi, Sushang, Yanqing, Bailu, Sampo, Pela, and Luka.

Several A tier picks deserve special mention. Luocha and Fu Xuan are sustain options that remain competitive despite being older 5-stars. Gallagher is a free-to-obtain 4-star who punches well above his rarity in sustain roles. Pela is one of the best 4-star supports in the game and appears in competitive teams even at high investment levels.

What belongs in B tier and below?

B tier includes Misha, Lynx, Arlan, Hook, and a few newer additions. These characters are not bad, but they require more specific team building or face harder competition for team slots from stronger options in the same role.

Lynx is worth noting as a free 4-star healer who fills a niche in teams that need Quantum Weakness coverage on the sustain slot. She is not the strongest healer available, but she gets the job done in the right context.

C tier and below represents characters that struggle to compete in the current meta, often due to kit limitations or having been outpaced by newer releases. This does not mean they are unplayable, especially for players who enjoy specific characters, but the investment required to make them work in endgame content is higher.

How should you use this tier list?

Tier lists are a starting point, not a rulebook. A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Eidolons and light cones matter. A C tier character at high eidolons can outperform an S tier character at E0 in specific scenarios.
  • Content type changes the rankings. Pure Fiction favors AoE damage dealers. Memory of Chaos rewards single-target burst. A character's tier can shift depending on which mode you are optimizing for.
  • Team synergy beats individual tier. A well-built A tier team with proper sustain and support will outperform a collection of S tier characters thrown together without thought.
  • Free characters are underrated. Gallagher, Pela, and Tingyun are all A tier and obtainable without spending premium currency.

What's coming in version 4.3 and beyond?

Based on community tier list templates that include upcoming characters, the roster continues to expand with characters including Cyrene, The Dahlia, Sparxie, Yao Guang, Ashveil, Evanescia, and Mortenax Blade appearing in leak-based tier list templates. Community rankings from the 4.3+ leaks template have already placed several of these characters in preliminary tiers, though these rankings will shift significantly once the characters are fully released and tested.

For players planning their pulls, the S tier is already competitive enough that skipping a banner to save for a future character you are excited about is a completely valid strategy.
