The Crafting Bench is the backbone of progression in LEGO Fortnite: Odyssey. Everything worth making runs through it: axes, pickaxes, swords, crossbows, charms, gliders, and more. Building one takes just 3 Wood and 5 Granite, and the recipe is available from the moment you create a world. The real question is how to push it further and what each upgrade actually unlocks.

What does the Crafting Bench actually do?
Accessing the bench opens four categories: Tools, Weapons, Accessories, and Equipment. Tools covers axes, pickaxes, and shovels. Weapons holds swords, crossbows, daggers, shields, pistols, muskets, and throwing spears. Accessories is where charms and totems live. Equipment contains mobility items like the Glider, Grappler, and utility gear like the Survival Compass and Torch.
One thing worth knowing: the bench cannot be opened while it is exposed to rain, according to the Fortnite Wiki. Place it under a roof or inside a structure to avoid interruptions mid-session.
Recipes unlock automatically when you collect specific resources. Picking up Copper for the first time reveals the Epic Forest Axe recipe, for example. You no longer need to upgrade the bench itself to access higher-tier recipes, a change made in Update v30.20 that removed the old upgrade tiers entirely. The bench description was also updated in v31.20 to remove the reference to upgrading.
The Crafting Bench upgrade system (Uncommon, Rare, Epic tiers) was removed in Update v30.20. All recipes now unlock by finding the relevant resources in the world.
How do you build the Crafting Bench?
Building the Crafting Bench requires 3 Wood and 5 Granite. Both drop from trees and rocks scattered across the starting biome. The recipe is unlocked by default when you create a new world, so there is no prerequisite station to build first. Place it anywhere and it builds instantly.

Tools
Every tool comes in multiple rarities. Higher rarities break harder materials and deal more damage to environmental objects. Here is the full breakdown sourced from the Fortnite Wiki:
Weapons
The weapons roster is where material investment really pays off. Longswords scale purely off metal bars, making them efficient to craft once you have a smelter running. Recurve Crossbows need rods and a Drawstring, which comes from Rollers in the Dry Valley. Hunting Daggers require gem-based materials at higher tiers.

Epic Longsword costs 8 Iron Bars
Arrows (x8 per craft) cost just Wood x1 and Feather x1. Stock up before any cave run. Cannonballs (x5 per craft) cost Granite x2 and Blast Powder x1.
Accessories: charms and totems
Charms and totems are equipped through the Inventory menu and provide passive bonuses. The Health Charm line increases your health pool. Cool-Headed Charms give heat resistance for desert and lava biome survival. Inner Fire Charms protect against cold. Regeneration Charms restore health over time. Totems of Return require 50 Storm Core each, regardless of rarity, making them expensive but extremely useful for exploration.

Equip charms via Inventory menu
Totems of Return always cost 50 Storm Core regardless of rarity tier. Farm Storm Cores before attempting to craft any version.
Equipment: mobility and utility
The Grappler (Copper Bar x3, Blast Powder x3, Cord x10) and Glider (Flexwood Rod x8, Wool Fabric x4, Silk Fabric x6) are the two mobility items worth prioritizing. The Glider requires both a Spinning Wheel and a Loom to be built first. The Basic Glider is a cheaper alternative using Wooden Rod x8, Wool Thread x4, and Silk Thread x6, unlocked after building a Spinning Wheel.
Navigation items include the Basic Compass (Glass x2, Wolf Claw x1), Spyglass (Glass x4, Knotroot Rod x1), and the Survival Compass (Glass x5, Sand Claw x1, Copper Bar x1). The Power Cell (Glass x6, Biomass x50) and Torch (Wood x3, Vines x5, crafts x3) round out the utility options.
What should you prioritize first?
The Fortnite Wiki and LEGO's official guide both agree on the general progression path. Here is how to think about it:
Early game: Build the bench immediately. Craft the Common Pickaxe (Wood x5) and Common Forest Axe (Wood x5, Granite x2) first. These unlock by default. Then grab a Common Hunting Dagger (Granite x6, Wood x4) for combat.
Mid game: Collect Knotroot from caves using an Uncommon Forest Axe. This opens Uncommon Longswords (Knotroot Rod x5) and Uncommon Pickaxes (Knotroot Rod x3, Bone x3). Head to the Dry Valley for Sand Claws and Sand Shells, which unlock Rare tools and the Cool-Headed Charm for heat resistance.
Late game: Lava caves hold Obsidian, Copper, and Brightcore. The Epic Pickaxe (Obsidian x8, Frostpine Rod x5) is the top-tier mining tool. Epic Longswords (Iron Bar x8) and Epic Knight Shields (Iron Bar x15) define the endgame weapon loadout.
The Crafting Bench cannot be opened while exposed to rain. Build a roof over it early to avoid losing crafting time during storms.
What is the most efficient path to Epic-tier gear?
After testing the full material chain, the bottleneck is consistently the lava cave resources. Obsidian, Copper, Brightcore, and Blast Cores all come from the same biome, so a single well-prepared lava cave run can unlock multiple Epic recipes at once. Bring a Snowberry Shake (confirmed by LEGO's official guide to provide 10 minutes of heat resistance), an upgraded Recurve Crossbow for distance fighting, and materials to build bridges across lava gaps.
Brute Scales for the Hearty Totem and Health Charm (Epic) drop from Brutes in the overworld. According to LEGO's official guide, Brute Scales can also be found in lava cave chests as an alternative to hunting Brutes directly.
For players working through the Ninjago event content, check the full LEGO Fortnite: Odyssey Ultimate Ninjago Event guide for event-specific crafting requirements. If you need Ritual Oil for Ninjago crafting, the Ritual Oil farming guide has the full breakdown. And if you are hunting elemental inks for Master Spinjitzu Scrolls, the all Ink locations guide covers every spawn.
