Pick your future job before spending your first Ability Point in MapleStory Classic World. Your stats carry into first job advancement, and leaving Maple Island means abandoning any unfinished island quests. Those decisions matter more than racing another player to level 10. This beginner guide gives you an opening route, compares the four starter classes, and explains how to keep potions from eating your mesos. You'll also know which progression unlocks to watch, how player shops work, and which launch rewards to collect while you train.

Which starter class should you choose?

Warrior is the most forgiving starting recommendation if you want straightforward combat. Its high HP gives you more room for mistakes, although its short attack range means getting close to monsters. Choose it for durability, rather than expecting it to suit every player.

First jobPrimary statCombat approachMain trade-off
WarriorSTRClose-range physical attacks with high HPLimited attack range
MagicianINTRanged spells using wands and stavesLow HP and heavy MP dependence
BowmanDEXPhysical attacks at a distanceRequires spacing and ammunition management
ThiefLUKClaw-based ranged attacks or dagger meleeLess durable than Warrior

Range makes Magician and Bowman appealing, but their costs differ. Magicians need to watch MP and potion supplies. Bowmen need enough ammunition and room to keep monsters at a distance. Neither class gets to ignore positioning just because it attacks farther away.

If you enjoy repositioning in action games, Thief is the closest match among these choices. Its claw route uses Lucky Seven for ranged attacks, while Double Stab supports a dagger approach. Lower HP makes avoiding unnecessary hits part of the job.

How should you allocate Ability Points?

Choose your intended class on the creation screen, then put your level-up Ability Points (AP) into that job's primary stat until level 10. A future Magician may defeat island monsters more slowly with INT, but adding STR for a temporary shortcut leaves those points in STR after advancement.

Every character begins with 25 AP distributed as follows, then receives 5 AP per level:

Intended jobStarting primary statStarting secondary statRemaining stats
Warrior12 STR5 DEX4 INT, 4 LUK
Magician12 INT5 LUK4 STR, 4 DEX
Bowman12 DEX5 STR4 INT, 4 LUK
Thief12 LUK5 DEX4 STR, 4 INT

What should you finish on Maple Island?

Your Maple Island priorities are a usable weapon, quest rewards, and enough mesos for the boat. Speak to quest NPCs as you pass them, including Roger, Sam, and Maria, rather than treating the island as a Snail-grinding contest.

Choose Wooden Club, then look for Razor

Select Wooden Club at creation. Its 19 Weapon Attack beats the 17 Weapon Attack on Sword and Hand Axe. It attacks more slowly, but the extra damage can reduce the hits needed to defeat early monsters.

At level 5, Razor offers 23 Weapon Attack and faster attacks. Biggs can award either Razor or Fruit Knife, so inspect your quest reward before buying a replacement.

Prioritize these quest rewards

Accept Biggs's Collection of Items early so you can gather its Orange Mushroom Cap while working through other hunting tasks. At level 5, make Pio's quest a priority: its chair is exclusive to Maple Island.

QuestMinimum levelWhat to doUseful rewards
Mai's Training3Complete the Blue Snail, Shroom, and Red Snail hunting tasks150 mesos and 20 Eggs
Biggs's Collection of Items3Gather 10 Blue Snail Shells and 1 Orange Mushroom CapRandom Fruit Knife or Razor
Pio's Collecting Recycled Goods5Break boxes for 2 Rusty Screws and 2 Old Wooden Boards150 mesos and The Green Relaxer
Rain's Maple Quiz5Complete all seven quiz parts490 EXP and 10 Oranges

The Green Relaxer restores 30 HP every 10 seconds while you sit. Pio's boxes can be crowded, so changing channels is better than waiting beside an empty box spawn. If you leave without the chair, Mina in Lith Harbor sells a Sky-blue Wooden Chair with the same recovery effect for 1,000 mesos.

Which monsters are worth hunting?

Red Snails give 8 EXP for 68 HP, compared with Blue Snails' 4 EXP for 51 HP. Move up once your damage lets you defeat them efficiently. Orange Mushrooms have a much larger HP pool, so their higher EXP does not automatically make them your fastest target.

When should you take the boat?

Shanks at Southperry can take you to Lith Harbor from level 7 for 300 mesos. Finishing the island quests usually brings you to around level 8, which also lets you begin Olaf's training after arrival.

Before boarding:

  • Collect Pio's Green Relaxer reward.
  • Finish and turn in your remaining Maple Island quests.
  • Equip Razor or your best available weapon.
  • Reserve 300 mesos for Shanks.
  • Check that your AP matches your intended job.

How do you get your first job at level 10?

After arriving in Lith Harbor, work through its beginner quests instead of staying on Maple Island until level 10. Olaf's First Training opens at level 8 and asks you to defeat 10 Stumps and 10 Slimes outside town. Buy recovery supplies first, because these monsters hit harder than island enemies.

At level 10, a self-starting quest directs you to Phil for an explanation of job advancement. All four first jobs require level 10 in Classic World, including Magician.

Take a taxi to your instructor's town before advancing. Beginners receive a 90% taxi discount, and that discount ends when you take your first job.

How should you spend Beginner skill points?

You receive 9 Beginner Skill Points (SP) by level 10. Each Beginner skill takes 3 SP to max, so you can finish all three. Prioritize Nimble Feet for travel, follow with Three Snails, and finish Recovery.

Beginner skillEffect at maximum levelCost and cooldown
Nimble Feet+10 Speed for 30 seconds10 MP; 3-minute cooldown
Three Snails40 fixed ranged damage1 Red Snail Shell and 5 MP per cast
RecoveryRestores 72 HP over 30 seconds15 MP; 2-minute cooldown

Three Snails is useful when your basic attacks struggle, because its damage is fixed. Keep Red Snail Shells if you intend to cast its maximum-level version.

After advancement, check first-job skill prerequisites before assigning SP. Version 1.0.0 changed Warrior's Improved HP Recovery and Iron Body at Grand Launch, so current skill descriptions matter more than an old allocation plan. Balance values can change again with updates.

How can you make your mesos last longer?

Potions are a recurring expense long before expensive equipment enters the picture. Mina's shop in Lith Harbor sells Meat and Lemons, both useful choices for keeping early recovery costs down.

Recovery itemRestoresNPC price in mesosRecovery per meso
Meat160 HP802.0 HP
Red Potion100 HP502.0 HP
Orange Potion250 HP1501.67 HP
Lemon150 MP1501.0 MP
Blue Potion200 MP2200.91 MP

Choose training targets by hits, not just EXP

Favor monsters you can defeat in 1 or 2 hits. Extra attacks consume more MP and give enemies more chances to damage you. A monster with a larger EXP reward can still be a worse training choice if every kill drains your supplies.

Skill costs also rise as you invest SP. Energy Bolt costs 8 MP at skill level 1 and 16 MP at maximum level. Power Strike rises from 4 MP to 12 MP. More damage is useful when it changes the number of attacks needed, rather than merely making the final hit bigger.

Use your chair when HP runs low, and use basic attacks when you need to conserve MP. Recovery also helps stretch supplies: at maximum level, its 15 MP cost restores 72 HP. Using Lemon and Meat prices, that is a saving of 21 mesos compared with buying the same healing through Meat.

Check drops before selling them

Equipment drops can pay for a useful supply refill. An Orange Mushroom's Long Sword sells to an NPC for 1,500 mesos, while a Red Snail's Wooden Sword sells for 2,500 mesos. Keep an upgrade you can use, then check spare items for quest or crafting purposes before selling them.

Hold onto useful ores and ETC materials. Crafting opens at level 10, and common drops already have uses: 5 Leather make 1 Processed Leather, while 10 Pig's Ribbons make 1 Processed Cloth. Gloves and capes also deserve attention because NPC shops do not sell them; they come through drops, crafting, quests, and other players.

Party training adds bonus EXP to party kills, but participation matters. If you stop attacking for 10 seconds, you stop receiving party EXP until you attack again.

Which progression unlocks should you prioritize?

Level 10 gives you more than a first job. Crafting and the launch check-in event become available, followed by Citizenship at level 12. Keep these milestones in mind so you can combine town errands instead of repeatedly interrupting training.

Should you register for Citizenship or buy housing?

Citizenship is worth checking at level 12 because daily and weekly town requests earn Contribution. Higher citizen grades provide discounts of 5% to 25% on shops, taxis, and services in your town, with storage discounts reaching 50%. You can contribute to only one town at a time.

Housing requires Citizenship grade Visitor or higher. Speak to Bianca in Henesys or Scarlett in Kerning City when you qualify. You can own one home at a time, shared by characters on the same account. Keep potions and necessary equipment ahead of the house purchase in your budget, then inspect the registrar's purchase dialogue before spending.

Which early quests help with supplies and equipment?

Nella's level 10 chain is useful for Work Gloves and recovery items, but you need 1,000 mesos to start. Later quests add earrings, a weapon scroll, and a cape, giving you reasons to revisit towns beyond buying potions.

How do you open a player shop?

Once your trading restriction has ended, a Store Permit lets you offer items to other players. The Cash Shop's Utility category contains the regular, pink, and fall store options. Their capacity differs as well as their appearance.

Cash Shop store optionListing capacityPermit duration
Regular store12 items90 days
Pink store18 items90 days
Fall store18 items90 days

Choose the 12-item regular store if that covers your stock. The larger permits suit selling more different items at once. Check the expiry on the actual permit, especially if it came from an event rather than the Cash Shop.

To start selling:

  1. Find an open spot in the Free Market or an eligible area outside a main town.
  2. Leave enough room between your shop and neighboring stores.
  3. Choose a location where monsters cannot hit you, because taking a hit resets the shop.
  4. Add items, select quantities, and set prices.
  5. Give the store a clear title describing its stock, then select Open Store.

The Free Market attracts players browsing multiple shops. Training areas can work better for location-specific supplies, such as quest materials, Meat, Lemons, or return scrolls. Channel 1 generally offers more passing traffic, but finding a safe, available spot also matters.

Compare nearby prices before listing, and remember that sales have a 3% fee. A shop can hold three browsing players at once. Use its sold-items view to review what moved and how much it earned, rather than repeatedly stocking items that sit untouched.

Which launch rewards should beginners collect?

Two launch-period activities fit naturally alongside early training: The Journey Begins and Halloween Candies. Both accept characters from level 10, and both require quest progress rather than simply logging in.

Complete The Journey Begins check-ins

Speak to Maple Administrator at level 10 and accept The Journey Begins. Hunt monsters of level 10 or higher, collect Maple Leaves, then return for the turn-in. The quest uses 30 Maple Leaves; check your active counter before heading back.

The event ends on November 18, 2026, at 23:59 UTC. Check-ins are once per day per account and cumulative, so missing a day does not erase your completed check-ins.

  • Check-in 1: Snail pet, 30 Pet Food, 30 Red Potions, and 30 Blue Potions.
  • Check-in 4: Regular Store Permit lasting 7 days.
  • Check-in 12: Another Regular Store Permit lasting 7 days.

The event permits are shorter-lived than the 90-day Cash Shop permits. The Snail pet expires on November 18 at 23:59 UTC and cannot be revived, so claiming it later does not give it a fresh lifetime.

Finish both Halloween quests for Pumpkin Basket

The Halloween event runs until November 18, 2026, at 23:59 UTC. At level 10, speak to Malady in Henesys or Kerning City and accept Halloween Candies before hunting. Collect 100 Halloween Candies from eligible monsters of level 10 or higher, then return to her.

Talk to Malady again to begin Trick or Treat!. Deliver the three candy pouches to these children, then return to Malady for the reward:

ChildLocation
AnneThe Hill East of Henesys
EstelleThe Field South of Ellinia
RonnieThe Tree Tunnel At the Forest Up North

Pumpkin Basket is a level 10 one-handed sword available to all jobs, with 27 Weapon Attack, +3 Speed, Fast attack speed, and 7 upgrade slots. Compare it with your current weapon before replacing anything. Completing the first candy hand-in alone does not award it.

Halloween Candies are untradeable quest items that expire when the event ends. The red, blue, and green Malady's Candies are separate, tradeable recovery items: they restore 600 HP, 450 MP, or 300 HP and 300 MP respectively.

Your next major character decision arrives at level 30, when your starter job branches into a specialization. Until then, keep AP aligned with your class, choose training targets that do not drain your potion budget, and collect useful quest gear along the way. Browse the MapleStory guide collection when you're ready to plan your next steps.
