Characters Confirmed To Be In Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls flips the script on traditional tag fighters by locking each of your four characters into a specific role the moment you pick them. Your first pick becomes the Leader, and the remaining three fill Shooter, Vertical, and Assault slots in order. That means a character's raw power is only part of the equation. A fighter who dominates in one slot can be dead weight in another, so building a strong team requires knowing exactly where each character belongs.

I have spent the last stretch since launch doing two things: playing the game, and reading every tier list, clip thread, and post-match complaint I could find. What struck me is how little agreement there is. Four characters in particular get placed at opposite ends of the roster depending on who you ask, and I think the split tells you more about this game than any single list does.

Overall Tier List

Here is the overall ranking that accounts for versatility across all four positions. Characters sitting in C-tier are not necessarily bad fighters. They tend to excel in one specific slot and struggle everywhere else, which limits how much flexibility they give you when building a team.

The three biggest moves I am making against the early consensus are these. Danger climbs out of the basement, Black Panther jumps into S-tier, and Ms. Marvel drops to C. I will explain all three below.

Tip
Magik and Blade are the only two characters that every list I checked put in S-tier. If you want a pick that is not going anywhere after the first balance patch, start with one of them.

Who are the best Leader characters?

Hulk still sits at the top of my Leader rankings, and this is the one place where I am holding the line against a chunk of the community. His armored body forces opponents into a defensive mindset because hitting him risks triggering counters, which are exceptionally strong in the current meta. Pressing his Gamma radiation unique on a downed opponent ramps up both his attack power and movement speed to levels that are genuinely difficult to deal with.

The pushback on Hulk is real, though. Players who have learned to space him out and refuse the counter bait report he falls apart, and at least one prominent list has him near the bottom of the roster entirely. My read is that he is a Leader-only character, devastating on point but nearly worthless as an assist, and lists that weigh assists heavily punish him for that. In the Leader slot specifically, he is still a problem.

Magik, Blade, Black Panther, and Spider-Man all perform well here too. Each brings something unpredictable to the table. Blade's kunai setups become especially threatening when you pair him with a projectile assist, while Magik's portal movement makes her offense hard to read and even harder to defend against. Spider-Man brings screen-wide range and the game's best meterless counter option in Spidey-Sense, which gives him a defensive answer that most Leaders lack.

Black Panther deserves a callout. She was treated as a solid-but-unremarkable pick at launch, and the community has steadily talked her up since. Her range and mix-up potential are strong enough that I have seen serious players argue she is the best character in the game outright. I am not going that far, but she belongs in the top group.

Ms. Marvel works as a Leader for newer players because her movement is quick and her moves are straightforward to execute, but her offense becomes predictable at higher levels. This is exactly why she has fallen so far in community estimation. She is fine until people learn the matchup, and then she is not.

Technical characters like Green Goblin, Storm, and Danger rank lower in this specific slot, though that reflects the learning curve more than a hard ceiling. Green Goblin in particular demands a lot. His grenade order matters, each grenade has different effects, and his glider gives him an entirely separate moveset to memorize. The payoff is there, but you need serious training mode investment before it shows up in matches.

The lower-tier Leaders each have a specific problem. Captain America's shield-throw unique is slow and easy to react to, and his counter demands a level of timing precision that is difficult to hit consistently in a fast-paced game. Iron Man zones well but falls apart the moment anyone gets inside his range. Peni Parker deals with randomized projectiles, which creates consistency problems, and her mech's large body makes her easier to hit. Ghost Rider can be neutralized by forcing his heat gauge to fill too quickly. Deadpool's healing rate does not keep up with the damage he needs to take to access his most powerful tools.

If you are new to the game, check out our beginner character recommendations before committing to a Leader. Some high-tier picks have steep learning curves that can hurt your win rate early on.

Who are the best Shooter characters?

Speed and range are the two things that matter most in the Shooter slot. The faster a projectile comes out and the more screen it covers, the more pressure it applies when your Leader is in the middle of a combo.

Iron Man has the best Shooter assist in the game, and this is one of the few placements nobody argues about. His Unibeam covers a huge portion of the screen and comes out fast enough to be used reliably in most combo extensions. Magneto and Doctor Doom are close behind. Magneto's metal ball projectile is snappy and covers solid ground, while Doom's laser beam fires quickly and hits hard.

Magik would rank higher here, but her fireball is smaller than Magneto's despite having a similar startup speed. Ghost Rider is the interesting outlier in this slot. His ranged assist works differently from everyone else's by launching the opponent into the air, which creates combo opportunities at distances that no other Shooter can replicate. It is worth testing, and it is the single biggest reason he is not lower on my overall list.

Multi-hit projectiles suffer in this role. Green Goblin and Peni Parker both deal with the problem of only one bullet connecting, which wastes the assist slot. Black Panther ranks lowest among Shooters because her spear takes too long to come out and is easy to avoid, which is a good reminder that her S-tier overall placement is carried entirely by her Leader play. Hulk and Wolverine have projectiles that simply do not justify the slot compared to what they offer in other positions.

Who are the best Vertical characters?

Most Vertical assists work similarly in terms of launch height and base damage, so the rankings here come down to hitbox size, execution speed, and range.

Blade and Hulk stand out at the top. Both have large hitboxes on their anti-air assists, making them reliable even when the opponent is not in a perfect position. The A-tier options all execute their Verticals quickly enough to convert off most setups.

Green Goblin and Danger struggle here. Goblin's anti-air projectiles are small and easy to avoid. Danger has the worst deal in this slot because her Vertical requires her to be standing directly next to the opponent to connect, which defeats the purpose of an anti-air assist. This is a hard mechanical limitation and no amount of player optimization fixes it, which is exactly why I keep her Vertical at the bottom even while raising her overall placement.

Warning
Placing Danger in the Vertical slot is one of the more common mistakes newer players make. Her proximity requirement makes the assist nearly useless in practice. Put her on point instead.

Who are the best Assault characters?

Magik has the best Assault assist in the game. Her sword-slam creates three fiery pillars that are extremely difficult to avoid, especially when a teammate is applying overhead pressure at the same time. The damage sits at 9,500, which is slightly below the standard 10,000 most characters hit and well below Iron Man's 10,500, but the ease of landing it and the combo opportunities it opens up more than compensate.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Ultimate Character Tier List

Magneto, Hulk, Storm, Spider-Man, and Carnage round out S-tier here. Spider-Man's Assault pulls the opponent toward you, which is a unique property that pairs well with almost any Leader. Blade can cross up the opponent with his Assault, creating mix situations that are hard to defend without knowing it is coming. Loki's projectile and slash combination deals solid damage and is straightforward to use.

Peni Parker is an unusual case. Her Assault has the highest damage potential on the entire roster, but the randomized gadget selection means the first hit can knock the opponent airborne while the second misses entirely. High ceiling, low floor. She is the one character where I understand the argument for ranking her higher than I have, and I would not fight anyone who did.

Danger sits at the bottom of Assault rankings because her drill loses damage as it travels across the screen, which makes it one of the few Assault assists that actively punishes you for using it at range. Doctor Doom's orbital laser and Ms. Marvel's spinning attack both take too long to connect to be reliable.

Tip
Magik's Assault dealing 9,500 damage instead of the standard 10,000 is a fair tradeoff given how consistently it connects. For a deeper look at her kit, the Magik character guide covers her Dark Portals and Soulsword in full.

Which characters is the community most split on?

These are the four placements where I found genuine, sustained disagreement, and they are worth understanding before you commit practice time to anyone.

Danger is the big one. She was written off as the worst character in the game at launch, largely because her Vertical assist is unusable and her Assault damage falls off at range. But players who stuck with her have found a legitimately strong Leader hiding under all that. Her adjustable-range beams, aerial combo routes, and Calibrate drone setups give her a conditioning game with a very high ceiling. I have moved her from the bottom tier to A-tier and I suspect she keeps climbing.

Hulk splits the room harder than anyone. Put him on point and he is arguably the best Leader in the game. Judge him on total roster value and he is a one-trick pick with two dead assist slots. Both takes are defensible. Where you land depends entirely on how you build teams.

Black Panther is the quiet riser. She was treated as mid-tier at launch and has been climbing in player estimation ever since, to the point where some now call her the best character outright. Her Shooter assist is genuinely bad, which drags her composite score down, but her Leader play is top three.

Ms. Marvel is the faller. Easy inputs and fast movement made her look strong in the first few days. Once players learned to read her offense, she stopped working, and multiple community lists now have her at or near the bottom. She is still a fine character to learn the game with. Just do not expect her to carry you in ranked.

How should you build a team around these rankings?

The tier lists above are most useful when you read them together rather than in isolation. A team built around an S-tier Leader needs Shooter and Assault assists that complement that Leader's gameplan. Magik as a Leader pairs naturally with Iron Man in the Shooter slot for the fast beam assist and benefits from her own Assault being available through a teammate.

Characters who rank low overall can still be the correct pick for a specific slot. Ghost Rider is a B-tier overall character, but his Shooter assist does something no one else can replicate. If your team needs that aerial launch property to extend combos, he earns his spot regardless of where he sits in the general rankings.

And this cuts the other way too. Black Panther is S-tier overall on the strength of her Leader play, but slotting her in as your Shooter is a mistake, because her spear is one of the slowest projectile assists in the game. Read the role tables, not just the overall one.
