Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection gives the main character access to every weapon type in the game, making recipe hunting one of the most rewarding activities you can pursue. While most gear unlocks naturally as you defeat monsters, a handful of powerful weapons are locked behind hidden chests scattered across the world. Knowing exactly where to look saves you hours of wandering and keeps your loadout ahead of the curve.
How Do Weapon Recipes Work in MHS3?
Before diving into locations, it helps to understand the crafting system. Most weapons and armor in Monster Hunter Stories 3 do not require a recipe at all. When you encounter a new Monstie, that creature's associated weapon and armor automatically become available at any blacksmith or mercenary cat in major cities and campsites.
However, certain weapons only unlock when you physically find their recipe, usually tucked inside a chest hidden somewhere in the environment. Once you have the recipe, head to any blacksmith to forge it.
Every weapon has three upgrade levels. The first level is simply forging the weapon. Subsequent upgrades increase stats, but some upgrade materials only become available after finding specific drops or advancing the story far enough.
The best general strategy for expanding your arsenal is grinding through every monster you encounter and collecting their dropped materials. Recipe chests are the bonus layer on top of that foundation.

All Weapon Recipe Chest Locations
Here is every weapon recipe chest currently documented in Monster Hunter Stories 3, organized by region.
Seahorse Harp Recipe (Azuria - Sunpetal Plains)
The Seahorse Harp Recipe sits inside a small rock shelter built into the mountainside. Head toward the southeast border of the Sunpetal Plains region in Azuria and look for the shelter nestled against the mountain's edge. The chest is inside.
Cat's Soul Recipe (Azuria - Broadleaf Basin)
Find the Cat's Soul Recipe at the center of the Broadleaf Basin region in Azuria. There is a small hill with a distinctive tree growing from it. This tree sits north of the battlefield where the party experienced their first major conflict at the end of Act 1, so the landmark should be familiar. The recipe chest is at the base of that tree.
If you are having trouble spotting the tree, use the Act 1 battlefield as your anchor point and move north until the hill comes into view.
Gunhammer Recipe (Mt. Canalta - Narrow Passage)
The Gunhammer Recipe requires a bit more effort. It is located in the Narrow Passage of Mt. Canalta, an area you pass through during the main story.
To reach it:
- Head to the northwest pathway inside the Narrow Passage
- At the fork, take the south path (the north path leads to a story-related feral Monster)
- Use a Canyne or another Monstie capable of digging through ground holes
- Dig through the hole at the end of the south path
- This drops you into a small area in the southeast part of the Narrow Passage
- The Gunhammer Recipe chest is waiting there
You cannot reach this chest without a Monstie that has the digging ability. Make sure your party includes a Canyne or equivalent before attempting this detour.
Crystalline Flower Recipe (Muddle Marsh Depths)
The Crystalline Flower Recipe is found in the Muddle Marsh Depths, specifically in the large open area filled with swamp holes and breakable walls. This is the first major zone you reach after being separated from your party during the main story, so you will recognize it immediately on a second visit.
The chest is positioned behind the northern wall of this area. Look for a breakable wall section along the north edge and smash through it to find the recipe.
Kamak Gunlance Recipe (Rococo Rocks)
The Kamak Gunlance Recipe is one of the more vertical challenges in the game. It sits in a chest on top of the northwest rock tower in the Rococo Rocks region. This tower is positioned toward the center of the region rather than at the extreme edge.
To reach the top, you need to ride one of the gust streams that carry you upward. Locate the correct stream near the tower and let it carry you to the summit where the chest waits.

What's the Best Way to Unlock More Weapons?
Recipe chests cover a small portion of the total weapon pool. The majority of weapons in Monster Hunter Stories 3 unlock automatically when you encounter new Monsties in the wild. Every new enemy type you fight adds that creature's associated gear to the blacksmith's available forge list.
This means the most efficient path to a full arsenal is:
- Explore every region thoroughly to trigger new Monstie encounters
- Collect dropped materials from every monster fight to build upgrade resources
- Grab recipe chests as you pass through each region using the location data above
- Return to blacksmiths regularly to forge newly unlocked gear before moving on
Upgrade material requirements for levels two and three can be gated behind story progress or rare monster drops. Forge the first level of any recipe weapon immediately so you have it available, even if you cannot upgrade it right away.
Tips for Efficient Recipe Hunting
- Mark chest areas on your map as you enter new regions so you do not backtrack unnecessarily
- The Gunhammer chest is easy to miss because the south fork in Mt. Canalta looks like a dead end until you dig through it
- The Kamak Gunlance chest requires vertical movement, so players focused on ground-level exploration often walk right past the tower without looking up
- Recipe weapons tend to have unique designs and stat profiles that differ from standard monster-drop gear, making them worth the detour
- Since the source page notes it is still in progress, additional recipe locations may be added as the community documents more of the game
The Rococo Rocks gust streams also connect to other exploration points in the region, so riding them is worth doing even if the Kamak Gunlance is not your priority.
With these five recipe locations tracked down and your Monstie roster growing from regular combat, your weapon selection in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection will stay strong from the early game all the way to the endgame grind.
