50 Cent and VICE Studios Team Up for PAYDAY Adaptation

Starbreeze Entertainment has announced a partnership with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson'sG-Unit Film & Television and VICE Studios to adapt the PAYDAY video game franchise for screens. The deal was made public on August 10, 2026, and positions the collaboration as central to Starbreeze's broader ambition of turning PAYDAY into what the company calls “a world-leading, ever-evolving heist universe across all forms of entertainment.”

Why 50 Cent makes sense here

This pairing is not as random as it might first appear. 50 Cent built G-Unit Film & Television into a serious production outfit, with crime dramas like Power proving the company can deliver high-budget, long-running franchises that actually connect with mainstream audiences. VICE Studios, meanwhile, has a track record of leaning into gritty, real-world crime stories. Put those two together with a heist game IP and the fit is pretty clear.

Jackson addressed the deal directly: "G-Unit Film & TV has built cinematic crime stories that connect with audiences around the world. Teaming up with Starbreeze and VICE Studios and bringing the world of PAYDAY to the screen gives us the chance to build something big, a high-energy franchise that pushes the heist genre forward."

He also has history with gaming. Back in the mid-2000s, 50 Cent had two games built around his persona, so this is not his first time crossing into the medium. Returning to it from the production side, rather than as a licensed character, is a different move entirely.

The franchise behind the deal

PAYDAY 2 sits at the center of this franchise's legacy. Released in 2013, it grew into one of the most-played co-op shooters on PC, with the series now claiming a community of more than 50 million players across its history. That player base gives Starbreeze real leverage when pitching the IP as something audiences already know and care about.

PAYDAY 3 launched in 2023 to a rougher reception, but the franchise's name recognition remains strong. A screen adaptation that lands well could do a lot to reinvigorate interest in the games themselves, which is almost certainly part of Starbreeze's thinking here.

No format has been confirmed yet. Whether this adaptation takes the form of a film, a series, or both has not been announced as of August 11, 2026.

What Starbreeze is actually building

The language Starbreeze used in its announcement is worth paying attention to. Describing the partnership as "central" to growing PAYDAY into a multi-entertainment universe signals this is not a one-off licensing deal. The company appears to be treating screen adaptations as a core pillar of the franchise going forward, not a side project.

That strategy mirrors what other game publishers have done successfully in recent years. The appetite for video game adaptations is clearly there, and a heist franchise with an established tone and built-in audience is a reasonable bet for the format.

What this means for players

For anyone who has spent time in the PAYDAY universe, this is the kind of news that at least earns a raised eyebrow. A well-executed adaptation with the right production muscle behind it could bring a wave of new players back to the games. If you want to get ahead of that curve, the PAYDAY 2 strategy guides are a solid place to revisit the mechanics before any potential attention spike hits.

No release window, platform, or format details have been shared yet. Starbreeze has said more information will follow as the project develops. For anyone tracking the broader trend of gaming IPs crossing into film and television, the full gaming guides hub keeps you covered across the titles most likely to make that jump next.
