"Ace Combat 8 has surpassed 1 million copies worldwide faster than any other title in the series," Bandai Namco posted across its social channels today. "Thank you to all the ace pilots around the world for your support in reaching record-breaking heights!"
That is a significant statement from a franchise that has been putting players in the cockpit for three decades. ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE cleared the 1 million mark in just over a week on sale, a pace no previous entry in the series has matched.
A 30-year franchise finds its fastest start
The Ace Combat series launched in 1995, so hitting a franchise-best sales pace in 2026 is not a small thing. The series has had commercial highs before, most notably with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which sold over 4 million copies over its lifetime. But Wings of Theve has cleared 1 million in the opening week alone, suggesting the ceiling here could be considerably higher.
Here's the thing: the flight shooter genre is more crowded than it looks from the outside. Kazutoki Kono, brand director on the series, addressed this directly earlier in 2026.
"Looking at the current market as of 2026, if you cast your eyes to not only mainstream but independent sectors as well, there are more games in the flight shooter genre than people may think," Kono said. "But what Ace Combat has, and the others don't, is the accumulated capital that has been acquired over the last 30 years, whether it be storytelling or the knowledge and the depth and breadth of aircraft available. This is something that is very hard to replicate."
He went further, pointing to what separates Ace Combat from the competition structurally. "A lot of them just have you fly and then go into dogfights. Whereas for the Ace Combat franchise, it is a hero-making experience that the player will go on to by overcoming challenges to ultimately become the ace pilot."
Where Wings of Theve sits in the series legacy
Sales velocity is one thing, but reception matters too. Wings of Theve has landed as the second-best-reviewed entry in the franchise's history, sitting just behind Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies. That is a meaningful comparison given how fondly the PS2-era games are remembered by long-time fans.
What most players miss when they see a sales number like this is the context behind it. The game launched on three platforms simultaneously, PC included, which expands the potential audience well beyond what earlier entries had access to. Ace Combat 4 never had a PC release. The combination of a multiplatform launch, a franchise with genuine legacy, and a game that is landing well with critics is a strong formula.
What comes next for the series
Reaching 1 million in a week sets a new commercial benchmark for the franchise, but the more interesting question is how the game performs over the following months. Ace Combat 7 built its audience steadily over years, buoyed by post-launch content and VR support. Whether Wings of Theve follows a similar long tail or burns brighter and faster remains to be seen from a commercial perspective, but the opening week gives Bandai Namco a strong foundation to build on.
