Eight days from now, Arknights: Endfield gets its most story-heavy update yet, and Steam players finally get to join in. Publisher GRYPHLINE and developer Mountain Contour confirmed that version update Sanctuary of Ink launches on October 15, bringing two new Operators, a fresh combat mode, an inn management minigame, and the game's official Steam release, all in one drop.

Stepping inside a living painting

The update's story chapter takes the Endministrator into a world that exists literally inside a scroll painting, created by Si, a Feranmut Proxy and the proprietor of Yuanyuan Manor Inn. Strange disturbances in the painted mountains pull the two into the main story, and the narrative digs into a connection between Si and the Endministrator that goes back a decade. Mountain Contour narrative designer AJ described Si's brush as more than a plot device: every stroke quietly reshapes the daily lives of the creatures living inside the painting.

The key here is that this isn't a side story. Sanctuary of Ink advances the main narrative while introducing a setting that looks genuinely distinct from anything the game has done before.

Two new Operators and how they play

Si comes to the battlefield with a mechanic built around Inksouls, pulled directly from enemies. Damage dealt to an Inksoul transfers back to the original enemy, so even when a target moves out of range, players can keep the pressure on or use the Inksoul to interrupt a charging attack. Her kit also buffs Cryo and Heat teammates, giving her real team-building value beyond the gimmick.

Argent Flow, an old acquaintance of the Endministrator, fights with sword and spear techniques and rides a warhorse named Nuli. His ultimate has him charging on Nuli before launching into a finishing aerial strike. A separate narrative event unpacks the backstory behind his composed demeanor. Both Operators arrive through successive recruitment events during the update window.

Contingency Contract gets smarter enemies

The returning Contingency Contract mode comes back as Indigo Experimental Operation, and it's more demanding than before. Selectable modifiers now cut both ways: one dramatically increases combo-skill damage but locks out further combo skills for a period after every two casts, forcing tighter timing decisions. More significantly, selected modifiers now add new attack patterns to enemies, something the mode hasn't done before. The UI for choosing and reusing challenge settings has also been cleaned up based on player feedback.

Running an inn between expeditions

Sanctuary of Ink adds Yuanyuan's Blazing Stoves, a countryside inn management mode that sits between the game's bigger adventure beats. Players grow crops, raise animals, cook dishes from farm produce, and use the earnings to expand the inn and farm. Different operating themes unlock additional recipes, and the Auto-Farmer tool handles sowing and harvesting, with its reach extending into Wuling's farming area as the story moves forward.

It reads like a deliberate change of pace, giving players something lower-stakes to do while staying invested in the world.

Quality-of-life changes worth knowing

Beyond the new content, the update ships with several improvements that address common friction points:

  • Saved equipment loadouts let players store and swap gear setups without rebuilding them manually
  • More precise mouse targeting improves accuracy in combat
  • Adjustable priority for simultaneous combo skills gives players more control over skill ordering
  • Direct field equipment placement from depot storage, so players no longer need to carry items in their backpacks first

Small changes, but the kind that add up over a long session.

Steam launch and what it means for existing players

The Steam release on October 15 is the headline platform news. Arknights: Endfield is already available on PS5, PC via the official launcher and Epic Games Store, iOS, and Android. Steam adds another major PC storefront to that list, and cross-platform progression means existing players can pick up exactly where they left off without starting over.

What most players miss in announcements like this is the soundtrack detail. Sanctuary of Ink's Eastern fantasy setting shaped the music direction, pulling in color bass, afrobeat, and UK garage. Contributors include Black Myth: Wukong composer Zhai Jinyan, Death Stranding composer Ludvig Forssell, Chinese avant-garde electronic band 8:48, and returning musician Crywolf. That's a genuinely eclectic lineup for a single update.
