The trailer opens at Xavier's School
The clip begins at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom delivering an ominous narration. "Something's coming," he says, "something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision." Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X, briefly blinded by what appears to be an incursion, the collision of two universes.
From there the trailer shifts to Avengers Tower, where Thor delivers a speech to what looks like the first gathering of every major hero faction in the MCU. The full Fantastic Four are present, alongside Ant-Man, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson's Captain America, and the Thunderbolts. It plays less like a superhero pep talk and more like a general telling troops they probably won't survive. Thor's line lands hard: "We're going to need a miracle."
Every hero faction in one room
The scale here is genuinely hard to overstate. The trailer cuts through a rapid succession of hero groupings that suggests Doomsday is pulling together threads from across the entire MCU and Fox's X-Men universe simultaneously. Namor and Shuri (the current Black Panther, played by Letitia Wright) appear to be in a confrontation in Namor's throne room, with the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts flanking Shuri. The read here is that the heroes are going to Wakanda's old enemy to ask for help against Doom.
Cyclops is seen combat-ready at Xavier's School. Channing Tatum's Gambit fights Simu Liu's Shang-Chi. Mystique goes up against Yelena Belova. Loki looks worried, which should concern everyone. There are quiet goodbye moments scattered through the chaos: Ant-Man kissing his daughter Cassie Lang on the forehead, Human Torch holding Susan Storm as an incursion threatens to consume them.
Doctor Doom's power level and the Steve Rogers question
The standout moment is the Doom versus Thor sequence. Thor launches at Doom with Stormbreaker. Doom stops it dead with two fingers. That single image communicates more about Doom's threat level than any amount of exposition could. Thor, who has gone toe-to-toe with Thanos and survived, is completely outclassed.
Then Rogers shows up. Chris Evans, back in the suit, calling Mjolnir to his hand while Thor watches in disbelief. How exactly a younger Steve Rogers returns to the present timeline remains unexplained, and the trailer is clearly not interested in answering that yet.
The bigger open question is Doom's actual role. His narration at the start sounds less like a villain monologue and more like someone who has seen the threat coming and is trying to prepare for it. Is Doctor Doom the antagonist of Doomsday, or is he working toward the same goal as the Avengers through radically different means? The fact that he shares a face with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr. plays both) adds another layer that the film is clearly going to spend time on.

What December 18 is shaping up to look like
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. The official synopsis frames it as the Multiverse Saga's final chapter, with heroes from three distinct universes on a collision course against an existential threat. Based on this trailer alone, that description undersells it considerably.
The hero count visible in this single trailer is already larger than the full roster of Endgame. The Fox X-Men characters appear to be playing a real role, not a cameo. And Doom stopping Stormbreaker with two fingers is the kind of moment that sets the stakes for everything that follows.
