Black Flag Resynced director eyes Mirage-style challenge system

Game director Richard Knight says the team has looked into adding Assassin's Creed Mirage's challenge system to Resynced, but modern Anvil compatibility makes it a complex ask.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced Review - Review 2026 - PCMag Middle East

The post-launch story for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced keeps getting more interesting. The game hit 3.5 million sales within two weeks of launch, blowing past Ubisoft's own annual expectations in 14 days flat. With that kind of momentum, the team at Ubisoft Singapore has been fielding a lot of questions about what comes next, and one of the more compelling answers just surfaced.

Game director Richard Knight has confirmed that the team has actively looked into bringing Assassin's Creed Mirage's post-launch challenge system to Resynced. The idea? Mission replay with new objectives layered on top. Knight's own words: “We've looked into this one quite a bit.”

Why the Mirage blueprint is harder to copy than it sounds

Here's the thing: wanting to do something and actually shipping it are two very different conversations in game development. Knight was direct about the friction involved. The challenge system as it exists in Mirage doesn't live in the modern Anvil engine that Resynced runs on, which means the team can't just flip a switch and port it over.

"I can't promise anything on it just because it exists in Mirage, but it doesn't exist in the modern Anvil," Knight explained. "So, it's like new tech, right? They do have a solution. We do roughly see how it works, but it's going to take time to understand if it's something we can build or how long it would take."

That's not a no. It's a "we're doing the homework." The distinction matters.

A Hitman veteran's perspective on challenge design

What makes Knight's interest in this feature feel genuine rather than diplomatic is his background. Before working on Black Flag Resynced, he spent time on the Hitman franchise, a series that practically built its identity around replaying missions with escalating constraints and speedrun timers.

"Personally, as someone who used to work on Hitman and has played a lot of Hitman and likes seeing the speedrun timer on screen, I think it's a very interesting way to play a game," he said. "But, yeah, no promises on that one."

That framing tells you something. Knight isn't just nodding along to a fan request. He's describing a design philosophy he personally connects with, which at least means the feature would be in capable hands if it ever moves forward.

important
Knight was clear that no timeline exists for this feature. The team is still assembling the post-launch roadmap, and New Game Plus doesn't have a confirmed release window yet either.

Where the roadmap stands right now

Ubisoft Singapore is still building out the full post-launch plan for Resynced. New Game Plus is confirmed and listed as a top priority, taking some cues from Assassin's Creed Shadows. There's also work happening on the option to hide Edward Kenway's blowpipe, and DLC ideas are on the table, though Freedom Cry's fate specifically remains undecided.

The challenge system sits in a different category from all of that. It's not on the roadmap yet. It's in the research phase, which is earlier in the pipeline than anything the team has formally committed to.

If you want a clearer picture of how much content is already in Resynced before any of this lands, the how long to beat guide for Black Flag Resynced breaks down the main story, completionist run, and new content hours in full.

The sales numbers give the team real leverage here. 3.5 million copies in two weeks is the kind of result that justifies engineering time on new systems. Whether that translates into a Mirage-style challenge mode or stays on the cutting room floor depends on how the Anvil investigation plays out. Keep an eye on Ubisoft Singapore's roadmap announcements, and check the Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced guides hub for coverage of everything the team does ship.
