The Borderlands franchise has passed 100 million sales, Gearbox Software announced on November 2, alongside plans for more Borderlands 4 content in 2027.

“We just wrapped our Year 1 roadmap, and the team is cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year,” the studio said in its community message. Gearbox is also asking players which characters they want to spend more time with and which stories deserve a payoff.

The sales milestone began with Borderlands in 2009

The first Borderlands launched in 2009, and franchise sales stood at 94 million through August 2025. Borderlands 2 remains the series’ biggest individual seller at 31 million copies, followed by Borderlands 3 at 23 million.

The latest game’s contribution comes after a difficult PC launch. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously described “a little bit of softness” in Borderlands 4 sales tied to technical problems, while expressing confidence that sales would catch up over time.

For a closer look at the shooting and looting itself, the Borderlands 4 review examines the game beyond its commercial performance.

What Borderlands 4 delivered in Year One

The first-year roadmap included a substantial batch of playable characters, story content, and endgame encounters:

  • Two Story Packs
  • Five Bounty Packs
  • Two new Vault Hunters
  • Two free Raid Boss encounters
  • A Takedown endgame raid

September’s releases included Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort, which introduced Loveless the Hacker as the second new Vault Hunter. Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows also arrived with a boss rush activity.

Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue while Gearbox works on the next additions. The studio has not detailed what the extra content planned for 2027 will contain, so the announcement establishes continued support rather than a new lineup of named packs.

Gearbox asks which stories deserve a payoff

Alongside continued Borderlands 4 support, Gearbox is considering the direction of the wider franchise. The studio says it is exploring additional character arcs and storylines, with player feedback helping shape that work.

Its questions give players something more specific to respond to than a general request for suggestions: which characters do they want to spend more time with, and which stories deserve a payoff? Gearbox is directing that conversation toward its social channels and the Gearbox Devcast, where the team responds to community feedback.

“Big plans take time, and we need some room to work,” Gearbox said. The studio says it will discuss those plans further when it is ready, leaving the broader franchise discussion separate from the commitment to keep supporting Borderlands 4.

The Hunt returns on November 6

The milestone celebrations also include The Hunt, the community fundraising event supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and its work treating and researching childhood diseases.

Earlier in 2026, The Hunt raised a record $118,995.80. For the upcoming event, 2K Foundations and Gearbox will match every dollar donated, up to that same amount. That gives the community’s next loot hunt a purpose beyond filling another inventory slot.

The Hunt starts November 6. Players returning to Borderlands 4 can find resources covering its current loot and build systems in the Borderlands 4 guide collection.
