The indie climbing game that dominated conversations earlier this year is about to get bigger, and it won't cost you a thing. Cairn now has a firm launch date for its free DLC, On the Trail: Deep Water: October 29 on PC and PS5.
The date itself carries some weight. October 29 puts the DLC squarely in the window before awards season kicks off, giving The Game Bakers a fresh reason for players and critics to revisit one of 2026's most talked-about games right when it matters most.
Why this DLC is more than a content drop
Here's the thing: On the Trail: Deep Water was originally targeting an August release. The Game Bakers pushed it back in July, specifically to expand the scope and layer in new mechanics that weren't part of the original plan. That kind of deliberate delay, where a studio holds something back to make it better rather than ship on schedule, tends to produce content worth waiting for.
The result is a DLC that feels structurally distinct from the main game. Three new locations replace Mt. Kami as the setting, and each one is described as being smaller in scale. That smaller scale comes with a trade-off: a limited energy mechanic now governs your climb. Every move costs something. Route selection and gear choices stop being optional considerations and become the difference between reaching the top and starting over.
For players who have already worked through the main campaign, this is a meaningful shift. The original game rewards patience and precision. Deep Water adds a resource pressure that changes how you read a climb before you even start it.
Marco changes the game, literally
The second playable character is where things get interesting. Aava returns as expected, but Marco joins her as a fully distinct climber with his own physical profile and movement feel. He's shorter and less flexible than Aava, which limits certain routes that she can navigate with relative ease. The offset is a longer reach, stronger arms, and an upgraded climbot model.
These aren't cosmetic differences. Playing as Marco means rethinking routes you might have already solved as Aava. The same three locations effectively become six distinct experiences when you factor in how differently each character interacts with the terrain. That kind of built-in replayability is smart design for a DLC that's free.
Free Roam opens up Mt. Kami
Alongside the new story content, The Game Bakers is shipping a Free Roam update that lets you return to Mt. Kami outside the story's constraints. Both Aava and Marco are available for this mode, and every path on the mountain is accessible without the narrative structure dictating where you go or how.
For players who want to test Marco's reach against routes they already know from the main campaign, this is the cleanest way to do it. It also gives returning players a reason to spend time in the original setting without replaying the full story.
If you're coming into this fresh or want to sharpen up before the DLC lands, the Cairn beginner strategies guide covers climbing techniques, resource management, and survival fundamentals that will carry over directly into the new energy-limited areas. The Cairn guides collection has everything else you need to get up to speed before October 29.
