The DMZ extraction mode that launched alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare back in 2022 never really went away. With Modern Warfare 4 confirmed to bring a full-featured, rebuilt DMZ mode on October 23, there is renewed interest in the original beta version that has been quietly running in Warzone this whole time.
Here's the thing: the original DMZ beta is still free to access on most platforms, matchmaking is alive enough to find games in under five minutes on popular maps, and it remains one of the more distinct modes in the shooter games space. If you have never touched it, this is genuinely a good moment to understand what the format is before MW4 resets the whole experience.

How to get into the DMZ beta right now
Accessing DMZ depends on your platform, and the process is slightly different on each. One important note first: PS4 and Xbox One are no longer supported. Warzone was delisted for new downloads on those platforms as of June 4, so this is strictly a current-gen situation.
On Xbox Series X|S, search for "Call of Duty DMZ" directly in the Xbox store. A free MW2 app will appear that gives you access to download and play DMZ. An Xbox subscription is required to play online.
On PlayStation 5, search for "Call of Duty DMZ" in the PSN store. When the MW2 listing appears, tap the three-dot icon to the right of the wishlist button to reveal additional options, including a free DMZ-only app. PS Plus is not required to play.
On PC via Steam, search for the MW2 (2022) app, scroll to the DLC section, and download the DMZ standalone for free. No purchase of MW2 is needed.
The state of DMZ matchmaking in mid-2026
Player counts are not publicly tracked, but the matchmaking situation is functional. Al Mazrah, the largest map in the rotation, fills lobbies in under two minutes across all platforms. Smaller maps like Vondel take a bit longer, typically a few minutes, because the pool of active players is thinner.
Cheating is a real consideration on PC and in cross-play lobbies. PS5 players can disable cross-play through the network settings inside the Call of Duty game menu, which significantly reduces the chance of running into cheaters. The tradeoff is longer queue times, but matches are still findable within three to five minutes with cross-play off. Xbox players can do the same, though the setting lives in the Xbox system multiplayer settings rather than the in-game menus.
What makes DMZ different from standard Warzone
DMZ does not use the same loadout logic as Warzone or standard multiplayer. Instead of bringing a pre-built class into a match, players work with Insured weapon slots that carry cooldown penalties when a loadout weapon is lost. Lose your gear without extracting and you wait before you can use that slot again.
The mode also runs a bartering system where looted in-game items can be swapped for gear at specific locations, and a Faction reputation structure that gates access to additional Insured weapon slots and rewards. Completing story missions tied to each Faction is how you progress the meta-game between matches.
Al Mazrah's Koschei Complex is worth flagging specifically. It is a hidden underground area with multiple access points scattered across the map, and it contains some of the best loot in the mode. First-timers will want to know how to get in before stumbling around the surface.
What MW4 is adding when it launches in October
Infinity Ward has confirmed several new systems for DMZ's return in Modern Warfare 4. Dynamic weather is coming to the mode, shifting conditions mid-match in ways the original beta never attempted. A new Wanted system described as "GTA-like" will track and flag players who become threats to others in the zone, adding a bounty-style layer to the existing PvPvE format.
The most interesting mechanical addition is the MIA system. Operators who fail to extract from a match will not simply be reset. They stay behind in the DMZ zone, and other players will have the ability to find and rescue them in subsequent matches. That is a meaningful shift from how the beta handled failure states.
MW4 launches October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Between now and then, the beta version in Warzone is the only way to get a feel for extraction-style Call of Duty gameplay before the full release changes everything.
