The pieces have been falling into place for a few weeks now. Infinity Ward posted a tease describing its upcoming game as "determined, bold, relentless." Fake leaks cluttered social media, muddying the waters just enough to keep things uncertain. Then billbil-kun, a leaker with a strong track record on this kind of pre-announcement intel, posted what amounts to a near-confirmation: the 2026 Call of Duty entry is subtitled Modern Warfare 4.
The image in the post was obscured, but not obscured enough. The title is readable to anyone willing to squint at it for more than two seconds.

What the naming actually means for the franchise
Here's the thing: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is not the same game as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the 2007 original that redefined the genre. That older game carries the "4" as a position in the franchise's release order. This new one is the fourth entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series that Infinity Ward kicked off in 2019. Two different things wearing confusingly similar names.
The rebooted Modern Warfare line went 2019, 2022, and then the series took a detour with Black Ops entries before returning to Infinity Ward for this year's release. The sub-series numbering makes internal sense once you trace it, but it's the kind of thing that will absolutely confuse anyone who hasn't been paying close attention.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (2026) are entirely separate games despite the similar naming. The 2007 title is a franchise position number; the 2026 title is a sub-series sequel number.
The pressure riding on Infinity Ward right now
The timing of this release matters. Black Ops 7, developed by Treyarch, landed as a low point for the series, and there's a real sense within the community that Activision prioritized giving Infinity Ward enough runway to build something solid, even at the cost of Treyarch's reputation on that last entry.
That's a lot of weight to carry into a reveal. The "determined, bold, relentless" language from Infinity Ward's tease reads less like marketing copy and more like a studio aware it needs to deliver something that actually moves the needle.
For CoD fans who've been grinding through recent entries with diminishing enthusiasm, this is the game that either restores confidence in the franchise or confirms the series has genuinely lost its footing. Check out our game reviews for context on where recent entries landed.

Loadout details expected at reveal
Xbox showcase on June 7 is the likely stage
The official reveal is expected to land at Xbox's June 7 showcase, which has already been positioned as a significant event for new game announcements. A new Call of Duty reveal fits the scale of what Xbox typically uses that stage for, and the timing lines up with how Activision has historically handled its annual CoD marketing cycle.
The key here is that nothing is confirmed until Activision or Infinity Ward says so directly. But between billbil-kun's track record and the developer's own teasing, the gap between "leak" and "announcement" is pretty narrow at this point.
If you want to brush up on the Modern Warfare sub-series history before the reveal, our gaming guides have you covered on the previous entries. The June 7 showcase should give everyone a proper first look at what Infinity Ward has actually been building.
