Collecting Magic: The Gathering® | Star Trek™: A First Look - Social

Sixty years of Star Trek history is about to land on your kitchen table. Magic: The Gathering has officially opened preorders for its upcoming Star Trek Universes Beyond expansion, and the details confirmed so far make this one of the more ambitious crossover sets Wizards of the Coast has put together.

The global tabletop release is set for November 13, 2026, with prerelease events running from November 6 through November 12. That gives local game stores a full week to run events before the set hits shelves broadly. The main expansion carries set code TRK, while the dedicated Commander-only set runs under TRC.

Four precons, four very different crews

The July 2026 First Look confirmed all four Star Trek Commander precons, each built around a distinct three-color identity and a corner of the Trek universe.

  • Federation Fleet (Jeskai) pulls from the Picard and Janeway eras, leaning into starships and card draw
  • Landing Party (Bant) channels the original series with landfall and away-team exploration mechanics
  • Klingon Fury (Mardu) goes aggressive, built around Warrior tribal combat
  • We Are the Borg (Esper) runs artifact creatures and the new Assimilate mechanic

Face commanders and full decklists have not been confirmed yet, but the spoiler season is already delivering. Revealed legends so far include Captain Kirk, Boldly Going, Picard, Steadfast Captain, Spock, Logical Choice, Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest, Seven of Nine, Captain Kathryn Janeway, Benjamin Sisko, Besieged, and the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class, which is a legendary Spacecraft card.

New mechanics that actually fit the source material

Here's the thing about Universes Beyond sets: the mechanical design either clicks with the IP or it feels bolted on. Star Trek looks like it's in the former camp.

Three new mechanics are confirmed for the set. Assimilate lets you take control of a creature or put a creature card onto the battlefield under your control, which is about as on-brand for the Borg as it gets. Face a Dilemma triggers when players choose modes, fitting neatly into the decision-heavy nature of Commander games. Federation scales abilities based on the number of creature types among your non-Borg creatures, rewarding the diverse crews that define Starfleet lore.

The Spacecraft permanent type and the station keyword also return from the earlier Edge of Eternities set, with the U.S.S. Enterprise-D headlining that category.

important
Cards in the main TRK set are Standard legal. Commander-only cards in the TRC set are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, but not Standard. If you're building for competitive formats, you'll want to track which cards come from which set.

What 37 spoiled cards tell us about the set's direction

37 cards have been revealed so far, with spoilers updating daily. The early picture shows a set that spans all major Trek eras, from Kirk's original series through Picard's later run, with the Borg faction getting serious mechanical support rather than just flavor text callbacks.

The Assimilate mechanic in particular has Commander players paying close attention. Theft effects are always powerful in multiplayer formats, and building an entire precon around the concept means We Are the Borg could arrive as one of the stronger out-of-the-box options in the lineup. That said, full decklists aren't public yet, so the actual power level remains to be confirmed once Wizards drops the complete card lists.

For players who enjoy strategy games with deep decision trees, the Face a Dilemma mechanic looks particularly interesting. Mode-choice triggers add a layer of mind-game tension that fits Commander's political format well.

Prerelease events starting November 6 are the fastest way to get hands-on time before the full release. Check with your local game store for event registration, since spots at prerelease weekends tend to fill up quickly for high-profile sets. If you want to sharpen up your Commander fundamentals before the set drops, the gaming guides hub has resources worth bookmarking ahead of release week.
