CTO for Netflix FIFA Game Revealed

Delphi Interactive has appointed longtime games technology executive Julien Merceron as its new chief technology officer, placing him in charge of the studio’s technical direction and its upcoming FIFA football simulation launching exclusively on Netflix later this year. The project is being positioned as a rebuilt take on FIFA designed for Netflix’s expanding games platform and a broader global audience.

Merceron brings more than 30 years of experience across major publishers and development studios, including Konami, Bandai Namco, Square Enix Group, Ubisoft, and IO Interactive. His appointment comes as Delphi Interactive scales its production around one of Netflix’s most recognizable licensed games.

A Veteran Engineer Steps Into Leadership

Before joining Delphi Interactive, Merceron served in senior technical leadership roles across multiple AAA franchises. Most notably, he was worldwide technology director at Konami, where he led development of the FOX Engine. That technology powered projects such as Metal Gear Solid V and Pro Evolution Soccer, helping define their performance, animation systems, and visual fidelity during a key period for both series.

Across his career, Merceron has worked on engine architecture, production pipelines, and platform optimization, areas that are increasingly important as games expand beyond traditional console releases. At Delphi Interactive, his role will focus on guiding the studio’s engineering strategy while supporting creative leadership with scalable technology decisions.

Building a FIFA Game for Netflix

Merceron’s primary responsibility at Delphi Interactive will be overseeing development of a reimagined FIFA simulation built exclusively for Netflix. Unlike previous console-first FIFA titles, this project is designed around Netflix’s subscription ecosystem, with accessibility and cross-device performance forming part of the production strategy.

The game is scheduled to launch around the FIFA World Cup 2026, aligning its release with one of the sport’s largest global events. Netflix has steadily expanded its games catalog in recent years, and FIFA represents one of its most high-profile efforts to bring major franchises to its platform.

Delphi Interactive has described the project as a ground-up rebuild rather than a continuation of older FIFA design models. The goal is to modernize gameplay systems while keeping the core identity of football simulation intact for long-term fans.

Partnership With Refactor Games

To develop the FIFA title, Delphi Interactive is working alongside Los Angeles-based Refactor Games. The studios are using a smaller, veteran-focused development structure rather than a large production team, prioritizing experienced designers and engineers over scale.

This approach is intended to keep development focused on core gameplay and technical stability. According to Delphi Interactive leadership, Merceron will collaborate closely with vice president of strategy and operations Theodor Tang-Peronard and senior creative staff to ensure technology supports responsiveness, animation quality, and onboarding for new players.

Tang-Peronard has stated that Merceron’s background in football games and engine development helps sharpen the studio’s decisions, especially when balancing approachability with long-term depth in simulation design.

Technology Strategy Beyond FIFA

While FIFA is the immediate focus, Merceron’s role extends across Delphi Interactive’s broader roadmap. He will help define internal tools, pipelines, and live-service architecture as the studio grows its portfolio. That includes evaluating how games operate within streaming ecosystems and how future projects might integrate online systems, services, and potentially web3-adjacent infrastructure if the company expands into those areas.

Delphi Interactive’s partnership with Netflix positions the studio closer to platform-driven development rather than traditional boxed releases. Merceron’s experience across console, PC, and service-based projects is expected to support that shift as the studio adapts to distribution models centered on subscriptions and accessibility.

With development underway and the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaching, Delphi Interactive’s Netflix-exclusive FIFA project is shaping up to be one of the platform’s most visible gaming releases, now backed by a veteran technical leader with experience across some of the industry’s biggest franchises.
