Here is how to run DLSS 5 on Doom 2 without reinventing hell. You load the game through Doom 3: BFG Edition, launch it in the RBDOOM-3-BFG source port on DX12, feed it motion vectors, install RenoDX and drop in the official DLSS 5 library. A single pass changes almost nothing. Two to four passes repaint the whole level, and a mobile RTX 5090 rewards you with roughly 10 fps.
Why the BFG detour? Doom 3: BFG Edition ships The Ultimate Doom and Doom II inside it, and Doom 3 BFG Edition classic Doom is the cleanest legal way to put 1994 pixels into a modern renderer. Native DOS Doom would need dgVoodoo on DOSBox. This route skips that misery.
What You Need
| Component | Why it is here |
|---|---|
| Doom 3: BFG Edition | Contains Doom II, so you own the WADs legally. |
| RBDOOM-3-BFG (or the DOOM BFA fork) | Source port with a DX12 renderer. DOOM BFA focuses on classic Doom and pulls RBDOOM upstream updates. |
| ReShade | Injector that RenoDX lives inside. |
| RenoDX addon | Hosts the DLSS 5 Neural Rendering panel. |
| Motion vector bridge | Fakes the temporal data a 1994 game never produced. |
| DLSS 5 library | The official NVIDIA neural rendering DLL. |
| RTX 50 series GPU | Officially required. Anything else is a hostage situation. |
Step 1. Drag Doom 2 Into DX12
Our standard pipeline converts old games to DX11 first. Doom 2 DX12 makes that step pointless, because the port already speaks the API DLSS 5 likes best.
RBDOOM-3-BFG DX12 support arrived in version 1.5.0, which replaced OpenGL with DX12 and Vulkan. Pick DX12 in the renderer settings and do not touch Vulkan for this job.
- Install Doom 3: BFG Edition from Steam or GOG.
- Copy the RBDOOM-3-BFG build into the game folder, keeping the original files intact.
- Set the renderer to DX12 and launch Doom II from the classic menu.
- Disable in-game anti-aliasing, because RenoDX refuses to initialize while it is on.
Step 2. Vectors, RenoDX and the Library
A game from the floppy era has no idea what motion is. DLSS 5 motion vectors come from a bridge file placed next to the executable, which approximates the temporal data the model expects.
- Install ReShade against the RBDOOM executable with DirectX 12 selected.
- Copy the motion vector bridge into the executable folder.
- Copy the RenoDX addon and the DLSS 5 library into the same folder.
- Launch the game and press Home to open the ReShade overlay.
- Open the Add-ons tab and expand the DLSS 5 Neural Rendering panel.
- Press F6 to toggle the effect and use NR Intensity to control the damage.
The full instruction with every DirectX path, file layout and slider lives in our author guides. A clean DLSS 5 RenoDX setup fails mostly on folder depth, so move files one level at a time if the panel never shows up.
Settings That Actually Matter
| Setting | Doom 2 result |
|---|---|
| Injection point | Render stage gives the strongest changes. Output stage looks like a filter. |
| Passes x1 | Practically nothing changes. |
| Passes x2 to x4 | Everything changes, sprites and walls included. |
| Preset Default | Pushes green at high strength. |
| Preset Natural | Pushes blue, early Midjourney style. |
| Preset Cinematic | Pushes purple and lifts the black point. |
| Enable Upscaling | Unfinished. Turn it off at the first flicker. |
What Doom 2 Actually Looks Like
Doom 2 is the perfect demonstration of DLSS 5 multi-pass behavior. At x1 the model sees flat sprites, shrugs and leaves them alone. At x2 and above each pass reprocesses the previous one, ignores frame history and hallucinates freely, so imps change faces every frame.
- Every extra pass darkens the image, regardless of settings.
- Render stage injection alters geometry, which RBDOOM on DX12 makes painfully visible.
- Toggling F6 repeatedly leaks roughly a gigabyte of VRAM per toggle, so compare with the slider instead.
Performance, or What Is Left of It
| Component | Spec |
|---|---|
| GPU | RTX 5090 Laptop GPU |
| CPU | Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX |
| API | DX12 via RBDOOM-3-BFG |
| Frame rate with DLSS 5 | About 10 fps |
A DLSS 5 RTX 5090 laptop delivers the same 10 fps in Doom 2 as in Cyberpunk 2077. The model does not care how old the game is. It charges full price anyway, and the battery dies first.
Verdict
DLSS 5 old games support works only when the game reaches DX12, and Doom 2 qualifies thanks to RBDOOM. That does not make it pretty. Treat it as the most expensive Doom 2 graphics mod ever made , good for screenshots and terrible for actually killing demons.
