DrDisrespect Sparks Confusion Around Marathon Sponsorship

DrDisrespect stirred up the gaming community again by posting images of himself dressed as a Marathon character and hinting at a sponsorship deal with Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter. Just before the game's February 26 server slam, Beahm dropped a post on X that made it look like he'd partnered with Marathon.

The post caught fire fast. Fans and fellow streamers started asking questions, which pushed Bungie to step in and set the record straight. The developer confirmed that Beahm has no sponsorship or affiliation with Marathon, a reminder that managing brand relationships with controversial personalities comes with real friction.

Bungie shuts down the sponsorship claim

Beahm's X post showed a screenshot of his face on a Marathon runner, captioned "Tomorrow is going to be CINEMA DROPS ON #marathonpartner." The wording strongly implied an official deal. Bungie didn't wait long to correct the record, publicly stating that the streamer has no partnership with the studio.

Community notes appeared on the post almost immediately, and Bungie's clarification spread across social media to stop the misinformation from gaining more traction. This isn't the first time Beahm has suggested a connection to a game or event that turned out not to exist.

A pattern of denied partnerships

DrDisrespect pulled a similar move last month with the hero shooter Highguard. He claimed he'd been invited to a preview event. The studio said no invitation was sent. In both situations, Beahm treated the denials as proof he'd successfully generated buzz, framing the whole thing as a win for engagement.

Beahm, who was banned from Twitch, still pulls strong viewership on YouTube. His strategy reflects a growing trend where streamers manufacture attention through provocative posts, whether or not there's an actual business relationship behind them.

What this means for studios

Bungie's quick response shows how much weight studios now put on controlling their messaging. As influencers gain more power in gaming culture, developers have to react faster to prevent confusion or false associations. The attention Beahm generates can boost visibility, but it also forces marketing teams to spend time correcting the record instead of promoting the game.

Marathon's server slam is still the main focus for the team, but the DrDisrespect situation highlights how much influence individual personalities have over game narratives. Studios have to figure out how to engage with that influence without letting it spiral into misleading claims that damage trust with players.
