Marvel's Iron Man VR Beta Launches, PlayStation VR Bundle Coming In July

The footage hit the internet today, and within hours EA Motive Studio had confirmed it was real. Two and a half minutes of in-development gameplay from the studio's Iron Man game is now circulating online, giving the first real look at a title that has been in development since September 2022 without a single frame of official gameplay shown publicly. If you enjoy Marvel superhero games, you might also be interested in MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, which scratches a similar itch right now.

The footage carries an "AUG26" watermark, pointing to a very recent internal playtest. That detail matters because it suggests the clip came from a feedback-gathering session, not a deliberate marketing drip. Motive didn't plan for this to get out.

What four years of development looks like right now

Here's the thing: the footage looks early. A lot of assets are visibly unfinished, which is going to surprise people given the 2022 announcement. But early-stage leaks from internal playtests often look rougher than the actual state of a game, so it's worth not reading too much into the visual polish level.

What the footage does show is more interesting than its technical state. Players have already pulled apart every second of the clip and identified the following:

  • Combat and flight mechanics are both present and playable
  • Suit armor customization appears to be a feature
  • The S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier design has been revealed
  • Japan appears to be among the game's locations
  • Story characters spotted include Pepper Potts, Rhodey, Obadiah Stane, and Justin Hammer, with Madam Masque and Crimson Dynamo also potentially visible

The flight and combat combo is exactly what you'd expect from an Iron Man game, and the suit customization angle is smart. The character roster in the story is a solid mix of familiar faces and genuine threats.

The bigger picture behind this leak

This game is part of a three-title Marvel deal with EA. The second game in that arrangement, a Black Panther project, was canceled. The Iron Man game is what remains of that partnership, and the development path has reportedly not been smooth.

The leaked footage is also completely separate from the Avalanche Software Iron Man game that leaked earlier this month. That project was canceled years ago. This is EA Motive's current, active project, which makes today's leak significantly more relevant.

For context on what Marvel superhero games can look like when they land well, Marvel's Iron Man VR from Camouflaj gave players a taste of the flight fantasy back in 2020. EA Motive is clearly going for something far more expansive in scope, targeting a full single-player action experience rather than a VR-specific title.

important
Motive Studios has officially confirmed the leaked footage is authentic. This is not a fan concept or a canceled project clip.

Development timeline and what comes next

The "AUG26" watermark on the footage places this playtest in the current month. That means Motive is actively gathering feedback on the game right now, which is a normal part of development but also signals the game is still some distance from a release-ready state.

No official release window has been announced. EA has not commented beyond Motive's confirmation of the leak's authenticity. Given the gap between the 2022 announcement and what the footage shows, expectations around a near-term release date should probably be kept in check.
