Rockstar's GTA 6 Gameplay Finally Revealed on Netflix First

After years of leaks, delays, and two teaser trailers, Grand Theft Auto 6 finally showed its hand today. Rockstar Games partnered with Netflix for an exclusive 27-minute gameplay reveal called "Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look," with the full video landing on Rockstar's YouTube channel six hours later. The footage was captured entirely on PlayStation 5.

What the 27 minutes actually showed

The extended look wasted no time getting into the action. It opened with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos navigating a drug-running apartment block before a gunfight erupted, setting the tone immediately. From there, the footage moved through a range of scenarios: robberies, a car chase with lean-out-the-window shooting and impressive damage modelling, strip clubs, Daytona-style races, weightlifting, and kayaking.

Here's the thing: this wasn't just a highlight reel. The pacing showed how naturally the game moves between low-key moments and chaos. Jason and Lucia's apartment looks deliberately chintzy, a small detail that says a lot about where these two start out. NPCs fill the world in numbers that look genuinely dense, and yes, dog petting was confirmed on screen.

The character-switching between Jason and Lucia appears reactive rather than menu-driven. The two complement each other during missions, running distractions and covering different angles rather than just being two skins for the same playstyle. Rockstar has confirmed their relationship can be played as a full romantic partnership or kept strictly platonic, which adds a layer of player agency that GTA hasn't really offered before.

RPG systems that go deeper than GTA 5

Rockstar has been building toward a more simulation-heavy open world for years, and GTA 6 makes that explicit. Both protagonists are affected by eating, sleeping, and working out. Skip the gym long enough and it shows. Go on a multi-day bender and that shows too.

The wanted system has also been overhauled. Players will now accumulate a Criminal Profile that tracks behavior over time rather than just reacting to individual incidents. The driving and carjacking mechanics have been described as "more challenging" with a push toward realism that should make the open world feel less like a playground and more like a place with actual friction.

The world Rockstar built

Leonida, the game's Florida-inspired state, is confirmed to be the largest and most complex world Rockstar has ever built. The Grassrivers wetlands area alone looks like a full biome, complete with wildlife that suggests Red Dead Redemption-style hunting missions. Vice City itself sits at the center, a neon-soaked version of Miami packed with the kind of satirical detail the series has always done well.

Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson described GTA 6 as "a step forward in all respects" in comments made alongside the reveal. The studio reportedly sent a dedicated research team to Miami to meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, and gun dealers to build out the world's authenticity. That groundwork is visible in the footage.

The game launches on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC is not in the launch window.

What this reveal means for the November launch

Rockstar has dealt with an extraordinary run of gameplay leaks in the weeks before this reveal, and the studio addressed them publicly, calling the situation "heartbreaking" and warning players that some spoilers could affect the intended experience. Today's official reveal was clearly designed to reset the narrative and give Rockstar control of the story again.

It worked. The Netflix premiere was popular enough to temporarily crash the streaming service for some users, which is a fairly concrete measure of anticipation. The YouTube version follows six hours after the Netflix window closes.

With the November release date locked in, players planning their purchase should know the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition runs $100 and includes exclusive weapons, vehicles, shops, and missions not available in the base game. Worth knowing before preorders close.
