The two-week period covering April 27 through May 10 tells a story of Nintendo dominance, a few surprise holdouts, and one PS5 new entry that made a brief splash before fading fast.

Week one: Tomodachi Life takes off, Pragmata enters the scene

For the week of April 27 to May 3, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream on Nintendo Switch moved 150,374 units, pushing its cumulative total to 894,312. That set up the milestone perfectly. Sitting comfortably in second place, Pokemon Pokopia on Nintendo Switch 2 sold 23,350 copies to reach 950,394 lifetime units in Japan. Mario Kart World rounded out the top three with 8,538 units, sitting at a massive 2,914,917 cumulative total.

The interesting entry that week was Pragmata on PS5, which debuted at number four with 8,050 copies sold. A new PS5 title cracking the top five in Japan is worth noting, even if the 57,306 lifetime number after that week suggested its momentum was already tapering. The NS2 version of Pragmata also appeared at number nine with 4,172 units, bringing its combined launch total to roughly 75,931 across both platforms.

Saros on PS5 also showed up at number seven as a new entry, though its sales figure of 4,614 units did not appear in the following week's top 30 at all.

Week two: the million lands, and Nintendo's back catalog refuses to quit

The week of May 4 to May 10 is where the headline writes itself. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sold another 149,245 copies, pushing its cumulative total to 1,043,557. That is a million-seller in under two months, and the weekly numbers barely dropped from the prior week. That kind of retention is rare.

Pokemon Pokopia actually grew week-over-week, jumping to 28,312 units sold and pushing past 978,706 lifetime. At that pace, it crosses 1 million in Japan within days of this report. Mario Kart World held at 10,941 units for the week, now sitting at 2,925,858 total, which puts it on a clear path toward 3 million in Japan alone.

Here's the thing about Nintendo's back catalog performance across both weeks: it is relentless. Minecraft on Switch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all appeared in both charts. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now cleared 5.9 million units in Japan. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sits above 6.5 million. These are not flukes; they are permanent fixtures.

How the Switch 2 library is stacking up

What most players miss when looking at these charts is how many Switch 2 titles are running parallel to their original Switch counterparts. Animal Crossing: New Horizons appeared in both weeks on both platforms. The Switch 2 Edition version jumped from 3,246 units in week one to 5,011 in week two, a 54 percent increase. Kirby Air Riders also grew from 1,989 to 3,157 units week-over-week, suggesting word of mouth is doing real work there.

Donkey Kong Bananza appeared at number 26 in the May 4-10 chart with 1,717 units, putting its cumulative total at 498,585. It is sitting just outside half a million and will almost certainly cross that threshold in the next chart update.

The PS5 picture

Pragmata's second-week performance dropped sharply. After 8,050 units in week one, it sold just 2,212 copies in week two on PS5, a 72 percent decline. The NS2 version followed a similar drop, from 4,172 to 1,887. Crimson Desert appeared once in week one at number 25 with 1,843 units (48,033 lifetime) but did not return to the top 30 the following week. Resident Evil Requiem continued its slow burn, moving from 2,379 to 1,875 units across the two weeks, sitting at 62,475 cumulative.

PS5 software simply does not move in Japan the way Nintendo titles do. That is not a new observation, but two consecutive weeks of data reinforce just how wide that gap remains.

What the numbers point to next

Pokemon Pokopia crossing 1 million in Japan is the next milestone to watch. At its current trajectory, that happens before the end of May. Donkey Kong Bananza crossing 500,000 is another one to track in the next chart cycle.
