Epic Games is turning Fortnite into a movie theater. Starting May 19 at 10 a.m. EST, players can hop into The Mandalorian and Grogu Watch Party Island and catch the first 10 minutes of the film for free, three days before it opens in theaters on May 22.

Watch Party Island amphitheater
The island itself was built by Fairview Portals and Beyond Creative and is modeled after Navarro, the planet from the Disney+ series the movie is based on. There is a full amphitheater with a large screen at its center. When the event goes live, that screen will first play a message from director Jon Favreau, then roll the opening footage.
What Epic and Disney teased back in April
Epic Games teased the island in April alongside a broader push to bring more Star Wars content into Fortnite. A full trailer for the Watch Party Island dropped alongside its addition to the game's main menu, though the island itself remains locked until May 19. The Disney and Fortnite relationship goes back years, with The Mandalorian getting his own in-game outfit as far back as 2020 during Chapter 2, Season 5.
This is a bigger production than a simple video embed. The island has actual quests: players can search for Grogu, fight waves of Stormtroopers, and collect bounties. Spend more than 20 minutes on the island and you unlock the Mandalorian Sanctuary loading screen, which is exclusive to this island for the time being.
The Mandalorian Sanctuary loading screen is only available through the Watch Party Island at launch. No word yet on whether it will be added to the main game's item shop later.
The pre-release mood around the film is complicated
Here's the thing: the free preview is arriving at a useful moment. Pre-release reactions to The Mandalorian and Grogu have been mixed at best. Polygon's Jake Kleinman, who saw the first 15 minutes at an IMAX preview in April, wrote that the opening "feels more like a Star Wars video game or a Netflix show than the blockbuster movie that's going to return Star Wars to its former glory." That is not exactly a ringing endorsement for a film carrying the weight of Star Wars' theatrical comeback.
Offering 10 minutes free inside one of the most-played games on the planet is a smart hedge. Players who might be on the fence about a theater ticket can get a taste before committing. Whether that preview converts skeptics or confirms concerns is the real question.

After May 22, the island has one more event planned
The Watch Party Island is not a one-and-done activation. Epic Games and Disney plan to bring it back on May 26 for a post-release Q&A with Jon Favreau. That gives the island a second life once the film is actually in theaters, turning it into a kind of ongoing promotional hub rather than a single event.

The Watch Party Island is visible on Fortnite's main menu right now. The 10-minute preview goes live May 19, the film opens May 22, and Favreau's Q&A follows on May 26. Three dates worth keeping on your radar if you have any interest in where Star Wars goes next.
