GTA 6 Extended Look Becomes Netflix's Most Watched Video Ever

Rockstar Games' 27-minute "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" debuted on Netflix on August 27 and became the platform's most-viewed title for that week, pulling 31.1 million views between its Thursday afternoon release and Sunday, August 30. That's the full measurement window Netflix uses for its weekly Top 10 rankings.

Grand Theft Auto 6 topped Netflix's English-language film chart in 87 of 93 countries the platform tracks globally. The runner-up on that same list, thriller film "The Whisper Man," finished with 23.2 million views. On the TV side, the documentary "Death of the Pastor's Wife" led with 19 million views. Nothing came close to what Rockstar put together.

What 31 million views actually means

Here's the thing about comparing those Netflix numbers to YouTube: they're measuring completely different things. Netflix counts a view as total hours watched divided by the runtime, so one household watching the full 27 minutes once equals one view. YouTube counts a view the moment any video starts playing, including partial plays and rewatches.

With that context, the YouTube upload by Rockstar Games sitting at over 17 million views as of today is still a massive number. But the Netflix figure is arguably the more meaningful one, since it represents 31.1 million people who sat through the entire thing.

The YouTube version also carried some friction. The upload is age-restricted, which limits discoverability in the YouTube app's search results. Reaction videos and third-party uploads from outlets picked up tens of millions more views on top of the official counts, so the actual total reach of the extended look is well beyond what either platform's numbers show individually.

A new kind of Netflix content

Netflix classified the extended look under its English-language film category for the weekly rankings, which tells you something about how the platform sees this kind of content. There's no precedent for a video game preview sitting in that list, let alone dominating it globally.

The extended look itself was captured entirely from in-game footage running on PlayStation 5. It features protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos across both cinematic sequences and gameplay scenes set in the fictional Vice City, giving fans the longest look at the game to date after two trailers over the past three years.

tip
The GTA 6 Extended Look was the first piece of content Netflix has classified as a film in its Top 10 charts that originated as a video game preview. It represents an entirely new content category for the platform.

Rockstar approached Netflix about the partnership rather than the other way around. The exclusivity window was only six hours. Netflix streamed it at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, and Rockstar posted the same video to YouTube at 9 p.m. that same evening. Six hours of exclusivity was apparently enough to drive over 31 million views.

Why Rockstar's Netflix play worked

The numbers make the logic obvious in hindsight. Netflix surfaces content to subscribers who aren't actively searching for gaming news. Someone who hasn't followed GTA 6 development at all could open Netflix on a Thursday afternoon and find a 27-minute preview sitting at the top of the homepage. That's a marketing reach no YouTube algorithm can replicate for a game that already has massive mainstream awareness.

Netflix also allowed Twitch streamers to broadcast the extended look live during the exclusivity window, which added another layer of simultaneous viewership that didn't count toward either platform's official numbers.

GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. With the extended look now the most-watched piece of content Netflix has published, the hype cycle heading into the final stretch before release is operating at a scale that's difficult to put in context. The game's marketing machine is running at full capacity.

What the extended look revealed

Beyond the raw viewing numbers, the content itself gave fans the most detailed picture yet of what GTA 6 actually plays like. The 27-minute runtime covered Vice City's environment, the dual-protagonist structure with Jason and Lucia, and narrative setup for the game's story. It's the kind of content that typically lives behind a gaming outlet's exclusive preview, not on a streaming platform's homepage.

For players already tracking every detail, the extended look confirmed several character and world specifics that have been circulating in speculation. Everything from Jason and Lucia's character customization to how Vice City's environment functions as an open world got at least some coverage in the footage. For a full breakdown of character details confirmed in the extended look, the GTA 6 confirmed hairstyles guide for Jason and Lucia covers what's been locked in so far.

With November 19 approaching and the extended look already breaking records before the game ships, the question now is what Rockstar has left to reveal before launch day.
