Fortnite's Next Mini-Season May Skip One Piece

Official Fortnite promotional posters spotted in Madrid show generic anime-style skins instead of One Piece characters, casting doubt on the rumored crossover season launching November 1.

The pirate chest sitting on the Fortnite island had fans convinced. A full One Piece crossover season felt like a lock. Then Epic Games put up promotional posters in Madrid, and the hype train hit a wall.

The posters, which appeared in Madrid's subway system on October 20, don't feature Monkey D. Luffy, Zoro, or any other recognizable face from Eiichiro Oda's series. What they do show are two original, cell-shaded anime-style characters that appear to be Epic's own creations. One has black hair and holds a treasure map with the caption "Have you seen the treasure?" The other features turquoise hair (a design that was previously spotted in a skin survey circulating online) next to the words "Join the hunt." Both posters carry Fortnite's pirate llama logo.

What the posters actually tell us

Here's the thing: the absence of licensed characters in official marketing materials this close to launch is significant. Chapter 7 Season 4 ends alongside the Fortnitemares event in the early hours of November 1, and Epic typically doesn't hold back recognizable IP art when a major crossover is the centerpiece. The Simpsons mini-season last year had Springfield imagery front and center from the jump.

The current read is that the upcoming mini-season will follow a pirate theme built around original Epic characters rather than a dedicated One Piece collaboration. The comparison to Chapter 1 Season 8, which ran with the "X marks the spot" pirate concept using entirely original content, keeps coming up in community discussions for good reason.

That said, a full One Piece crossover isn't completely off the table. The mysterious pirate chest that appeared on the island and has been slowly revealing itself over the past several days still hasn't fully shown its hand. If you've been tracking the One Piece chest location on the island, you know the tease has been deliberate and drawn-out. Epic could still drop a collaboration announcement separately from the season's core theme, the way licensed skins often arrive mid-season regardless of the overall creative direction.

A step down from Springfield?

Fans who were expecting a One Piece season are going to feel this one. Last year's Simpsons mini-season was a full production: a Springfield-mapped island, themed weapons, and a wave of cosmetics tied directly to the show. A pirate season built on original anime-inspired skins, while potentially fun, doesn't carry the same cultural weight as one of the most popular manga series in history.

The turquoise-haired character from the poster was spotted in a community skin survey before this reveal, which suggests Epic has been planning original anime skins for this slot for some time. That's not the pipeline behavior of a company rushing to build around a licensed property.

What happens November 1

Fortnitemares wraps up and Chapter 7 Season 4 closes simultaneously in the early hours of November 1. The mini-season drops immediately after, giving players a short window before Chapter 8 begins. For a full breakdown of timing and what's expected at launch, the Fortnite OG Season 8 release date and start times guide has the specifics.

The next few days will likely bring more teasers. If Epic has a One Piece announcement in reserve, expect it to surface before or right at the November 1 launch. If the posters are the full picture, players are getting an original anime pirate season instead. Keep an eye on the island and Epic's official channels for anything that contradicts what Madrid's subway walls are currently telling us.
