Planet Zoo 2 Update 1.0.4 Drops With Animal Fixes and More Patches Incoming

What the 1.0.4 patch actually fixes

"The issues listed largely come down to the complex nature of Planet Zoo 2's simulation," Frontier Developments said in the patch notes accompanying the game's first post-launch update. That framing is honest, at least. A zoo sim tracking animal welfare, breeding, temperature, enrichment interactions, and habitat escape logic across hundreds of species is always going to ship with some rough edges.

Planet Zoo 2 launched to players eager to build and manage their dream zoos, but it didn't take long for reports of strange animal behavior and performance hiccups to surface. Frontier moved quickly, pushing update 1.0.4 live within days of release.

What the 1.0.4 patch actually fixes

The headline fixes touch the areas players noticed most. Franchise Mode gets the most attention, with stability improvements, better access to initial animal trading volumes, and a fix for juvenile Shoals that couldn't be listed for trade. If you've been running a Franchise zoo and hitting walls with the trading system, this patch should make that noticeably smoother.

On the animal side, the update addresses several behaviors that were clearly misfiring. Animals escaping habitats during specific actions, climbing animations breaking, enrichment interactions not registering correctly, and breeding frequency running at the wrong rate all receive fixes. Shoal welfare requirements and animal temperature calculations are also corrected. These aren't cosmetic issues; they directly affect how your zoo functions and whether your animals are actually thriving or just appearing to.

The key here is that Frontier also fixed an issue where animals were being automatically boxed far more often than intended, even in Wildlife Reserves during migration. That one was frustrating enough that it made it into the studio's own list of priority areas to keep monitoring.

Performance, visuals, and the building tools

Beyond animals, the patch covers a solid spread of quality-of-life corrections. FSR and DLSS were broken for PC players after selecting them in the graphics menu, which is now resolved. Audio distortion when cycling through heatmap tabs is gone. The Ultra graphics preset on PC now correctly sets Foliage Detail to Very High instead of leaving it at a lower setting.

Construction tools also get some attention. The default angle snap increment drops from 15 degrees to 1 degree, which is a meaningful change for anyone doing detailed habitat building. Several sandbox map editable areas have been expanded, including the China sculpted map getting access to the full plateau and a Tropical map allowing placement further along the beach. The Demolish Brush now remembers its set height between uses.

Career mode players also benefit from a fix where later save slots were incorrectly inheriting medal totals from save slot 1, which was prematurely unlocking career levels. A localisation error in the New England scenario had been asking players to place a souvenir shop when it should have said gift shop, which is now corrected.

What Frontier is still working on

The studio has been transparent that 1.0.4 is not the end of the patching process. Frontier has flagged several areas it considers ongoing priorities: animals jumping, climbing, and pouncing incorrectly, animals not aligning with enrichments as expected, habitat escapes during certain behaviors, and the auto-boxing frequency in wild areas. These are listed as known issues that will continue receiving attention in future updates.

Player feedback on the core creative toolset is also still being reviewed. The team confirmed it is reading community responses about building systems and will factor those into upcoming patches. Franchise Mode will continue to be monitored for any additional fixes needed beyond what 1.0.4 delivers.

What most players miss in patch notes like these is how much the animal simulation fixes compound. A single correction to breeding frequency or temperature calculations can change the feel of an entire zoo session. Getting these systems right matters more than any individual UI fix.
