For a franchise as massive as Game of Thrones, it's taken a while to get a strategy game that looks like it actually respects the source material. PlaySide Studios used Gamescom 2026 to change that, dropping the first proper gameplay trailer for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros and confirming the game is heading to PC via Steam in early 2027.

The reveal came during one of the busiest gaming events of the year, and this one earned its spot on the schedule. The trailer puts four playable factions on the table: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the White Walkers. Each faction brings its own army composition, buildings, and mechanics shaped by how they're portrayed in the HBO series, so you're not just reskinning the same units across four banners.

Heroes, direwolves, and the Night King himself

Here's the thing that makes this more than a generic licensed RTS: the hero roster. Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Ghost, Grey Wind, Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Night King are all confirmed playable, each with unique abilities that can shift the outcome of a skirmish.

That's a smart design choice. Anyone who's played strategy games knows that hero units with distinct kits give you real decision-making moments mid-battle, not just stat checks. Sending Jon Snow into a flanking push plays differently than anchoring Tywin in a defensive formation, and that asymmetry is exactly what keeps RTS matches from feeling like a numbers race.

The core loop looks classic: train units, secure resources, construct buildings, and claim territory. PlaySide is calling it an "action real-time strategy" game, which suggests the pacing leans faster than something like a traditional grand strategy title. The emphasis on skirmish battles across the Seven Kingdoms points to a mode structure built around replayable head-to-head combat rather than a slow-burn campaign.

What PlaySide is building toward

The game is officially licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on behalf of HBO, so this isn't a fan project or a loose adaptation. That licensing relationship matters because it means the studio has access to the full character and world assets from the series, which explains why the hero roster already looks this deep at the gameplay reveal stage.

PlaySide Studios also confirmed a beta test is coming before the early 2027 launch window, with sign-up details to be announced later this year. No specific beta date was given at Gamescom, but the studio pointed fans toward its official newsletter for updates.

tip
The beta sign-up is expected to open before the end of 2026. Keep an eye on PlaySide's official channels for the announcement.

For fans of the genre, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is shaping up as one of the more interesting strategy games on the 2027 PC release calendar. The combination of a well-defined asymmetric faction system, a recognizable hero roster, and the weight of the Game of Thrones IP gives it a foundation that a lot of licensed games skip entirely. Whether the execution holds up is a question for the beta, but the trailer at least suggests PlaySide knows what makes an RTS worth playing.
