METRO 2039 | Official Website | Journey into Post-Apocalyptic Moscow

4A Games brought Metro 2039 to Gamescom's Opening Night Live this week, dropping a new trailer that gives the clearest picture yet of what the series' first entry since 2019 actually looks like in motion.

The trailer builds on gameplay footage shown a few weeks earlier, this time leaning hard into atmosphere and world detail. Dark corridors, scarred surface environments, and the kind of oppressive dread the franchise built its reputation on with Metro 2033 all appear to be fully intact.

A new protagonist takes the tunnels

Here's the thing that's going to generate the most discussion: Artyom is out. Metro 2039 puts players in control of The Stranger, a Spartan soldier who had been living in exile outside the Moscow Metro system. Something pulls them back, and whatever that something is, the trailer makes clear it's not good news.

This is the first time the series has moved away from Artyom as the lead, which is a significant creative bet. The Stranger also speaks, making this the first voiced protagonist in Metro history. Whether that lands well depends entirely on the writing, but the shift at least signals that 4A Games isn't just making Metro Exodus 2.

What the trailer actually shows

The visual detail is hard to ignore. The engine work is a clear step up from Metro Exodus, with lighting and environmental density that make the underground sections feel genuinely claustrophobic. Surface sequences show a ruined Moscow that looks more expansive than anything in the previous games.

Combat looks grittier than Exodus too. Animations appear heavier and more deliberate, which fits a series that has always leaned into survival tension over run-and-gun momentum. The post-apocalyptic setting isn't just window dressing here; it shapes how every encounter plays out.

The game has already cleared one million wishlists, which for a single-player action title in this genre is a meaningful signal. Fans of the series have been waiting since Metro Exodus shipped in February 2019, and the appetite is clearly still there.

tip
Metro 2039 is currently targeting a February 2027 release. No specific date has been confirmed beyond the month.

Where this fits in the series timeline

The Metro franchise has always drawn from Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels, and the jump to 2039 pushes the timeline forward past the events of Exodus. Going back to Moscow after Exodus took Artyom far from the tunnels is a deliberate callback to the series' roots. For players who want a refresher on where the story started, the Metro 2033 guides collection covers the original game's world and story in detail.

The series sits comfortably in the action games space while doing things most action games don't bother with: moral weight, environmental storytelling, and a world that feels like it existed before you arrived. Metro 2039 looks set to carry all of that forward with a bigger budget and a new lead character who has enough backstory to carry a full game.

With Gamescom still running and a February 2027 window on the calendar, more Metro 2039 details are likely coming before the year is out.
