GTA 6 Could Take Around 80 Hours to Complete, Dev Reveals

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be a long one. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson completed an 80-hour playthrough of the game back in February, and that detail surfaced publicly this week as part of a wider preview of the title. It wasn't a final build, but it covered a meaningful chunk of the main campaign plus some optional side content.

What 80 hours actually means here

The playthrough wasn't a completionist run. Nelson's session mixed main campaign missions with select side quests, including at least one with direct narrative consequences. So the 80-hour figure isn't padding from collectibles or random activities; it reflects story-driven content with actual weight behind it.

That's a significant number. For context, GTA 5's main story clocks in somewhere around 31 hours for a focused playthrough. If GTA 6 doubles or more than doubles that at the campaign level, Rockstar is clearly building something with a lot more narrative density than its predecessor.

Nelson's playthrough used a non-final build, so the final release could differ in length. The 80-hour figure is one developer's experience, not an official completion estimate.

Nelson's vision for how players should approach it

Nelson was candid about what he wants from players. He acknowledged that Rockstar can't fit every mechanic imaginable and has to make deliberate choices about what serves Jason and Lucia's story. Here's the thing: his comments suggest the team is actively resisting the kitchen-sink approach in favor of something more considered.

He also expressed a hope that players won't just sprint through the campaign. His framing was almost lifestyle-oriented: he wants people to wake up, start their day, and then sit down with the game as part of a genuine routine. That's a different kind of ambition than just building a big open world.

A launch window without multiplayer

One thing worth keeping in mind: GTA 6 is launching as a single-player experience, which means all of that playtime sits squarely in the story campaign and its surrounding world. There's no GTA Online equivalent at launch to inflate the numbers or split the audience's attention.

That actually makes the 80-hour figure more interesting. Rockstar is betting that the single-player content alone is enough to hold players for a serious stretch of time before any multiplayer component arrives.

The broader picture coming into focus

This detail landed alongside a wave of new information. Rockstar premiered an extended look at Jason and Lucia's story on Netflix on August 27, giving the public its most substantial view of the game yet. Vice City has already been confirmed as roughly twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos, with surrounding areas reportedly 11 times larger than their GTA 5 equivalents.

Put the map scale, the story length, and the deliberate design philosophy together, and GTA 6 is clearly not trying to be a quick experience. Whether 80 hours feels like the right length will depend entirely on how Rockstar fills that time.

For everything else confirmed so far, the GTA 6 guides collection covers character customization, platform features, and more as details continue to emerge.
