Does GTA 6 Have Multiplayer at Launch?

Grand Theft Auto 6 is almost here, and the hype around Vice City's return is enormous. But one question keeps surfacing in every forum, Discord, and comment section: will there be multiplayer at launch? Rockstar has given a clear answer, and while it's not what the GTA Online faithful were hoping to hear, the full picture is a lot more encouraging than the headline suggests.

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI are now open, you can pre-order here.

Does GTA 6 have GTA Online or multiplayer at launch?

No. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 launches as a strictly single-player experience. There is no online mode shipping with the game, and Rockstar has made no announcement about a multiplayer component arriving on day one.

That confirmation caught a lot of players off guard. The assumption going in was that a new GTA would naturally bundle some form of online play, the same way GTA 5 did back in 2013. That's not happening here, at least not immediately.

The focus at launch sits entirely on Jason and Lucia, the two protagonists at the center of the story. Rockstar's messaging has been consistent: this is their story first, and the studio wants players to experience it without the noise of an online mode competing for attention.

Will GTA 6 ever get multiplayer?

Rockstar hasn't confirmed a multiplayer mode for GTA 6, but the studio's track record makes it very hard to bet against one arriving eventually.

Look at how the last two major Rockstar releases played out. GTA 5 launched in September 2013 as a single-player game, with GTA Online following roughly two weeks later as a free update. Red Dead Redemption 2 took a similar path, shipping in October 2018 with Red Dead Online entering beta the following month. Both times, Rockstar used the solo campaign window to let players settle into the world before opening the doors to multiplayer.

The pattern is consistent enough to treat as a working model rather than a coincidence.

What form could GTA 6 multiplayer take?

Rockstar hasn't said a word about how a GTA 6 online mode would be structured, so anything specific here would be speculation. What the sources confirm is that three possible delivery methods have been floated in the broader conversation: paid DLC, a standalone release, or a free update attached to the base game.

GTA Online launched as a free addition to GTA 5 and eventually became one of the most played online experiences in the industry, generating revenue through in-game purchases rather than an upfront cost. Whether Rockstar repeats that model, charges separately, or tries something new is genuinely unknown at this point.

Given how much GTA Online contributed to the longevity and commercial performance of GTA 5, it would be a significant departure for Rockstar to skip a multiplayer component entirely. The more likely scenario is a delay, not an absence.

What should you do while you wait?

The single-player campaign gives you plenty to work with at launch. Vice City is back, the dual-protagonist setup with Jason and Lucia adds a new storytelling angle, and Rockstar has had over a decade of GTA 5 feedback to inform how they've built this world.

There's also more news dropping around the same time. A third trailer may arrive alongside pre-orders on June 25, which could shed more light on what the full game looks like before you commit.
