The wait for an official box is finally over. Rockstar Games has dropped the cover art for Grand Theft Auto 6 and announced that pre-orders go live on June 25 across digital storefronts and select physical retailers.
What the pre-order date actually means
Here's the thing: pre-order dates are not arbitrary marketing moves. Digital platform holders operate under a firm rule that pre-orders can only open when a game is within 12 months of launch. With June 25 set as the start of the pre-order campaign, that window places the November 19 release date firmly in play and, more importantly, makes a third delay extremely unlikely.
GTA 6 has already slipped twice. The game was first teased in 2022 and formally revealed in late 2023, with the original trailer closing on a 2025 target. That slipped to May 26, 2026, and then again to November 2026. Each delay fed a fresh wave of community anxiety, but pre-orders opening on a specific date is about as close to a guarantee as the industry offers.
The cover art itself
Rockstar posted the image directly on X alongside the pre-order announcement, and the artwork is also available as a free downloadable file through the official Rockstar site. The cover features the game's dual protagonists, Lucia and Jason, in a composition that leans into the sun-drenched Vice City aesthetic the trailers have been selling since 2023.
A long road to this moment
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had been vocal about the November window for weeks before today's announcement. He reaffirmed the target publicly in May and acknowledged that the current release date sits roughly 18 months behind the game's original internal schedule. That admission was notable, but it also came with a clear commitment: November is the date, and summer marketing was always part of the plan.
The pre-order speculation had been running hot before today. A leaked affiliate email from a major US retailer in May suggested a pre-order window was imminent, but nothing materialized at the time. What looked like a false start turned out to be early noise ahead of the real announcement.
What comes next before launch
With pre-orders opening in a week and the release date set for November 19, Rockstar's summer marketing push is now officially underway. Expect a steady stream of trailers, gameplay reveals, and platform-specific details between now and launch. The game targets PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, with no PC release date announced.
