Arrowhead Game Studios has officially pulled the plug on GameGuard in HELLDIVERS 2, replacing it with Easy Anti-Cheat after acknowledging that the previous system was leaving too many gaps in protection. The move was announced directly via the game's Steam page, and the studio didn't sugarcoat the situation.

"The implementation of GameGuard for Helldivers 2 wasn't as effective as it could have been," the team wrote. "In the end we decided to take another path with EAC. EAC is an industry standard used in over 200 games, and we believe this will be an effective way to protect the Galactic War and will better protect fair gameplay and the integrity of the game."

That's a fairly candid admission from a studio that has spent the better part of the game's life dealing with cheating complaints from the community.

What this means for the mod scene

Here's the thing: not everyone affected by this change was doing anything wrong. Easy Anti-Cheat takes a broader approach to what it flags, which means some non-malicious mods, particularly cosmetic ones, will stop working until they're updated for compatibility.

Arrowhead was upfront about this too. The studio acknowledged that mods are "part of the DNA of PC gaming" and said it genuinely appreciates cosmetic and non-gameplay mods that don't affect other players. The problem, as they framed it, is the mods that create unfair advantages or actively disrupt the experience for others.

So expect some disruption in the short term. Mod authors will need to update their work, and there will likely be a window where popular cosmetic mods simply don't function. The key here is that Arrowhead seems willing to work through those cases rather than treating all mods as collateral damage.

Why Easy Anti-Cheat makes sense here

Easy Anti-Cheat has become the default choice for a wide range of PC multiplayer titles precisely because it's proven itself at scale. Being deployed across more than 200 games gives it a track record that GameGuard, at least in its Helldivers 2 implementation, couldn't match.

For a game where the Galactic War is a live, persistent meta-game that the entire player base participates in, cheating isn't just an individual annoyance. Players manipulating mission outcomes or resource counts can genuinely distort the state of the war for everyone. Protecting that system matters more in Helldivers 2 than it might in a standard competitive shooter.

The bigger picture for PC players

This swap has been a long time coming. GameGuard has faced criticism across multiple games over the years for being both overly intrusive and not particularly effective, which is a tough combination. Arrowhead landing on Easy Anti-Cheat puts Helldivers 2 in line with games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Rust, all of which run on the same system.

The timing is worth noting too. With fresh content drops and the ongoing Illuminate storyline keeping the player base engaged, the last thing Arrowhead needs is a cheat problem undermining the live game's momentum. Getting the anti-cheat infrastructure right now, even if it creates a rough patch for some mod users, is the smarter play.
