PS Plus subscribers woke up today to a genuinely good addition to the catalog. HELLDIVERS 2 is now available for PS Plus Extra and Premium members at no extra cost, and Arrowhead Game Studios timed the arrival with a substantial content drop called the Devoid of Liberty update. Two things landing at once means the game's player count is about to spike hard.
What PS Plus members are walking into
Before the Devoid of Liberty update, Helldivers 2 had already been through a significant evolution from its 2024 launch. The Illuminate faction had been reintroduced, the game had settled into a more stable cadence of warbonds and operations, and the community had built up a solid meta around loadouts and stratagems. New players joining through PS Plus aren't getting a bare-bones game. They're stepping into two-plus years of accumulated content.
Here's the thing: that's both exciting and slightly overwhelming for anyone dropping in fresh. The Devoid of Liberty update adds even more to process on day one.
The Devoid of Liberty update, broken down
The update centers on the Illuminate faction. New primary missions task squads with conquering and destroying Illuminate spires and gateways, completing data reconnaissance operations, and infiltrating Illuminate structures. Secondary objectives layer on top, including eradicating Void mutations, extracting research materials, and opening secondary extraction zones to speed up the end-of-mission pull-out.
Two new enemy types are the headline additions:
- The Wretch: A fast-moving creature built to overwhelm lighter fighters and dodge counterattacks. It punishes players who try to stand and trade shots.
- The Crusher: The opposite problem. This one soaks up heavy damage and hits back just as hard. Expect to burn through ammo and stratagems dealing with it.
Beyond new enemies, the rank progression system now extends to 300 total ranks of security access and privileges, with new titles unlocking along the way. SEAF platoons also join the fight properly now, arriving via dropships to assist in operations rather than just existing as background flavor.
The community challenge running through August 18
Arrowhead and PlayStation are running a collective event tied to the PS Plus launch. If the entire player base eliminates 500 million enemies before August 18, everyone who participates unlocks four Helldivers-themed PlayStation avatars. It's a smart move to funnel the PS Plus newcomers directly into active play rather than letting them sit in the tutorial.
The 500 million target sounds enormous, but with a fresh wave of PS Plus players joining today, the math gets considerably easier. Veteran players who've been grinding Illuminate operations all week will have a head start, and the new missions from Devoid of Liberty give everyone a reason to be in-game right now.
If you're brand new to the game and need to get up to speed fast, the Helldivers 2 beginner's guide covers enemy weaknesses, loadout basics, and stratagem priorities so you're not a liability to your squad from drop one.
