HoYoverse officially pulled back the curtain on Nodusfall during Gamescom 2026's Opening Night Live presentation, dropping the world premiere trailer for a co-op action game that looks nothing like the studio's usual output.
What the trailer actually showed
The footage featured protagonists taking on large, powerful beasts, with narration layered over the combat to set up the game's lore. Officially described as a co-op action game, Nodusfall asks players to "stand as one" against mighty beings through close coordination and sharp tactics. That framing puts it squarely in Monster Hunter territory, and the gameplay visuals back that up.
The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, which explains the visual fidelity on display. HoYoverse is known for pushing production values, but this is a different direction entirely from the gacha-style titles the studio built its reputation on. Nodusfall doesn't appear to follow that monetization model, at least based on everything shown so far.
From code name to Gamescom stage
This reveal didn't come completely out of nowhere. Trademarks for Nodusfall were registered earlier in 2026, and social media leaks had circulated before the official announcement. Rumors about HoYoverse developing a fantasy MMO actually stretch back to November 2025, when the project was still referred to internally as "Genesis."
That early code-named version was reportedly more ambitious on the tech side, with references to an "Artificial Intelligence Stimulated Ecosystem," All-Terrain Battle AI, and what were described as "Intellectual NPCs." Whether those systems survived into the current build of Nodusfall isn't clear from the trailer alone.
A different kind of HoYoverse game
Here's the thing: HoYoverse making a co-op beast-hunting game is a genuine surprise. Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail built the studio into one of the biggest names in live-service gaming, but both lean heavily on solo narrative content and gacha pulls. Nodusfall sounds like a direct pivot toward something more session-based and team-focused.
No platforms, release window, or additional gameplay details were announced alongside the trailer. Gamescom was purely the introduction. What most players will want to know next is whether this stays true to the co-op-first design or quietly folds in the monetization loops HoYoverse is famous for.
