The source material is set in 13th-century Persia and Mongolia, following a young orphan named Sitara who is sold into slavery to a family of scholars in the city of Tus. Her education is extensive, covering mathematics, astronomy, and more, which becomes both her greatest asset and her most dangerous trait once the Mongol forces of Genghis Khan sack the city.

After Tus falls, Tolui, one of Genghis Khan's sons, takes Sitara captive and brings her to the Mongolian imperial court. The word "jaadugar" itself is a derogatory label used for educated, outspoken women, and the series leans directly into that tension. Sitara must navigate a court where wisdom is a weapon women are expected to keep hidden, using political cunning to quietly subvert the patriarchal structures around her.
