In a noteworthy turn of events, the Japanese mobile gaming market is experiencing a robust resurgence in 2023, solidifying its position in the global gaming industry. In this report we analyze findings from a recently published report by Sensor Tower on the mobile game revenue and download trends in the Japanese market in 2023, adding insights into why these findings are relevant to web3 gaming.

In the first half of 2023, Japanese mobile gamers spent over $6.8 billion on games, surpassing the previous year's figures. Projections indicate a total revenue of $14 billion for 2023, nearing the 2021 record of $17.8 billion.

From January to August 2023, the Japanese mobile gaming market has exceeded $9 billion in revenue, securing its spot as the world's third-largest market, contributing 18% to the global revenue. Japan's Revenue per Download (RPD) stands at a substantial $21, four times higher than that of the United States.

After a two-year decline, downloads in Japan are on an upward trajectory in 2023. From January to August, downloads have surpassed 420 million, with a projected year-end figure of 620 million game installations.

Genres.jpg

RPGs continue to dominate, constituting 48% of the revenue structure. These games earned $4.3 billion from January to August. Mobile strategies follow as the second-highest revenue genre, generating over $1 billion during the same period.

The Japanese market is no longer limited to domestic developers, with foreign gaming companies actively competing. In 2023, five out of the top ten games were developed by non-Japanese companies. Korean and Chinese developers are in active contention for market share.

Japanese gaming isn't confined to its home country. "Dragon Ball Legends" and "Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle," both developed in Japan, have gained international recognition, amassing over $250 million in Western markets from January to August 2023. KAYAC, a company known for hyper-casual games, has garnered attention globally, extending its influence beyond Japan's borders.

Relevance to Web3

The resurgence of the Japanese mobile gaming market holds significance for the emerging world of web3 gaming. With the gaming industry as a whole moving toward decentralized, blockchain-based gaming experiences, Japan's robust mobile gaming market can provide insights into innovation and collaboration. Integrating web3 technologies with the Japanese gaming ecosystem could open up new avenues in player engagement, NFTs, and decentralized gaming economies, impacting the broader global gaming community.

As the Japanese mobile market continues its upward trajectory, it promises to be an exciting space to watch, both for gamers and industry stakeholders. Japan's resilience and innovation could set the stage for a new era in gaming.
