John Romero Headlines Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026

John Romero is heading to Bangkok. The co-founder of id Software and co-creator of Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D has been confirmed as the headline keynote speaker for Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026, taking place October 29 to November 1 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

His keynote is titled "Why We Still Make Games" and promises to "reflect on a lifetime of building games, overcoming setbacks, and navigating decades of industry change." Given everything Romero has been through recently, that framing hits differently than a standard industry retrospective.

A speaker with something real to say

Here's the thing: Romero is not just showing up to talk about the glory days of Doom. The timing of this announcement carries genuine weight. Earlier this month, id Software was hit by layoffs as part of Xbox's sweeping restructuring, and Romero publicly responded on social media with a message that stood out for its honesty.

"I'm so sorry for everyone at id Software affected by these layoffs," he wrote. "I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on. It's a strange and painful thing to step away from a place that holds so much of your work, friendships and history."

Romero's own studio, Romero Games, also felt the impact of Microsoft's cuts. An unannounced shooter the studio had been developing was cancelled in 2025 after Microsoft pulled its funding. So when Romero talks about navigating setbacks, he is not pulling from a history textbook.

Who else is on the speaker roster

Romero joins a lineup that is shaping up to be one of the stronger speaker rosters the event has put together. Confirmed speakers include Nick Herman and Dennis Lenart, co-founders of AdHoc Studio (the team behind 2025 hit Dispatch), Zhen Fang, VP and Head of International at Roblox, and Yoan Fanise, creative director and founder of indie developer DigixArt. More names are expected before October.

Last year's event set a high bar for memorable keynotes. Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield delivered a particularly sharp address declaring the games industry "broken, beaten, and battered." He retired from game development less than 12 months later, which gives his speech an almost prophetic quality in hindsight.

tip
Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026 runs October 29 to November 1 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

The show itself is growing

This year's event is billed as the biggest Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show to date. The public area expands to four halls, bringing the total event space to 35,000 square metres. Major publishers on the show floor include Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Sega, and there will be a dedicated space for indie developers from Southeast Asia and beyond.

The combination of a growing physical footprint and a speaker lineup anchored by one of gaming's most recognizable figures signals that the organizers are serious about positioning Bangkok as a major stop on the global games event circuit.

What most players miss about events like this is how much the speaker program shapes the industry conversation for months afterward. Schofield's speech last year was still being cited in layoff discussions well into 2026. A Romero keynote, given the current climate around Xbox cuts and studio closures, has every reason to land the same way.
