Jonathan Levine, the director behind 50/50 and Warm Bodies, is in early talks to direct Days of Thunder 2 at Paramount, with Tom Cruise set to return as NASCAR champion Cole Trickle. The project has been quietly building momentum, and it now has a script from screenwriter Will Staples, who co-wrote Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare alongside Paul Haggis and worked on Without Remorse with Taylor Sheridan. Staples' connection to Cruise reportedly stretches back to a rewrite he was brought in for on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation back in 2014.

From 1990 to now: what's changed in 36 years

The original Days of Thunder landed in 1990, directed by the late Tony Scott fresh off Top Gun. It was a full-throttle racing drama that put Cruise behind the wheel of a stock car and featured a stacked cast including Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Cary Elwes, and Randy Quaid, with a score from Hans Zimmer that holds up better than most people remember. The film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and the late Don Simpson, and it cemented a particular era of Cruise-as-action-icon that felt untouchable for decades.

Here's the thing: the gap between then and now is enormous, and the industry has changed completely. A sequel in 1995 would have been a cash-in. A sequel in 2026 is a different kind of conversation entirely.

Why this moment makes sense for a sequel

The timing is not accidental. The F1 movie proved this summer that motorsport drama still has serious box office pull, and Top Gun: Maverick already showed Cruise can revive a beloved legacy IP without embarrassing the original. Paramount greenlit Top Gun 3 in April 2026 with a script already in development, so Days of Thunder 2 fits neatly into what looks like a deliberate strategy to mine Cruise's back catalog at exactly the right cultural moment.

tip
Days of Thunder 2 is currently intended to be Cruise's next production, before other projects in his pipeline.

Levine is an interesting choice here. His filmography skews toward character-driven stories with genuine emotional stakes rather than pure spectacle, which suggests Days of Thunder 2 might aim for something closer to Maverick's balance of heart and action rather than a straightforward racing blockbuster. No story details have surfaced yet, and it's unclear how the sequel picks up from the original's ending.

The game connection worth knowing

For players who grew up with the franchise, Days of Thunder has a gaming history too. The 1990 film spawned a tie-in game, and the IP has carried cultural weight in casual games and racing titles since. If the sequel lands with the same cultural footprint as Maverick, a renewed Days of Thunder game presence becomes a real possibility worth watching.

What's confirmed and what's still open

Here's the lowdown on where things stand right now:

  • Director: Jonathan Levine in early talks
  • Star: Tom Cruise confirmed, reprising Cole Trickle
  • Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer returning from the original
  • Script: Written by Will Staples
  • Story details: None confirmed yet
  • Timeline: Intended as Cruise's next production

The project is early enough that a lot can still shift. Levine isn't locked in yet, and with no story details public, the actual direction of the sequel remains genuinely unknown. What this means for gamers and fans of the original is that there's real momentum here, not just a rumor cycle.
