11-Year-Old Steals $2,000 in Family Savings to Buy Robux

11-Year-Old Steals $2,000 in Family Savings to Buy Robux

A family in Canada is out $2,000 after their 11-year-old son stole the household's emergency savings and spent every dollar on Robux gift cards for Roblox. The parents, Hong Jin and Jason Kim, had no idea the money was gone until after the fact, and their attempts to recover it have hit a wall.

How a Walmart trip turned into a $2,000 loss

The story started with a shopping trip. The boy was left in the toy section of a Walmart by his grandmother, and that's when he made his move. He had already taken a $2,000 cash envelope, his parents' emergency savings, and he knew exactly what to do with it.

Walmart Canada limits gift card purchases to $1,000 per transaction. Rather than being stopped by that cap, the boy simply made two separate purchases of $1,000 each, buying five $200 Roblox gift cards per transaction. Ten gift cards totaling $2,000, all redeemed for Robux before his parents had any idea the cash was missing.

Here's the thing: Walmart Canada has no age restrictions on gift card purchases. There were no safeguards, no prompts, nothing that would flag a child spending $2,000 on gaming currency as unusual. By the retailer's own rules, every step of the purchase was technically by the book.

important
Walmart's no-refund policy on gift cards applies even in cases like this. Once the cards are redeemed, the funds are gone. The Kim family returned to the store with the cards and receipt, and were still unable to recover the money.

The refund wall and what comes next for the family

The parents went back to Walmart hoping for a one-time exception. Retailers typically enforce strict no-refund policies on gift cards specifically because of fraud risk, and that policy held here too. The Robux were already in the account, and Roblox's own policies around refunds for digital currency are equally rigid.

The Kims have spoken publicly about their shock, not just at their son's actions but at how easy the whole thing was to pull off. Hong Jin specifically raised concerns about Roblox's addictive qualities, pointing to the pull the game had over her child as a factor in why he went to such lengths. That concern is not unique to this family. A child once spent nearly $10,000 on FIFA in-game purchases using a parent's credit card, and in a separate case, a parent's account was drained of $20,000 through Genshin Impact gacha pulls. The difference in those cases was that refunds were sometimes possible. Here, cash-to-gift-card transactions leave almost no recovery path.

Why microtransaction stories like this keep happening

Roblox is free to play. There is genuinely a lot to do in the game without spending a single dollar. But Robux unlocks avatar items, premium game passes, and exclusive content across thousands of user-created experiences, and for younger players, that social currency carries real weight. Wearing the right avatar items or accessing the popular game modes their friends are playing can feel non-negotiable at that age.

The key here is that the gap between wanting Robux and getting Robux is frictionless for a child who already has cash in hand. Gift cards are physical, anonymous, and available at virtually every major retailer. There is no credit card required, no parental approval prompt, and in this case, no age check. The system worked exactly as designed, just not in the way any parent would want.

Parental controls on the Roblox platform itself do allow spending limits and purchase approvals, but those only help if the child is buying directly through the app. Physical gift cards bypass all of it entirely.

What happens to the Kim family now is unclear. The $2,000 is almost certainly gone, and the question of what consequences the boy faces at home remains a private matter. What is not private is the larger pattern this story fits into, one that comes up repeatedly wherever free-to-play games, young players, and easy access to gift cards intersect.
