Line Messenger, a leading messaging platform with 196 million monthly users across Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia, is set to launch its web3 mini-dapp platform in January 2025. The initiative is spearheaded by Line's web3 subsidiary, Line Next, in collaboration with the blockchain technology provider Kaia. The project aims to simplify access to web3 technologies, following trends seen in platforms like Telegram, which has gained traction through blockchain-powered gaming experiences.

About Line x Kaia

The mini-dapps will be built directly into Line Messenger, giving users access to wallet creation, asset ownership, and transaction services without needing technical blockchain expertise. This approach follows the model established by platforms like WeChat and Telegram, letting users engage with web3 features inside apps they already use daily.

The platform runs on the Kaia blockchain, a network created from the merger of Klaytn and Finschia. This infrastructure supports the platform's aim to bridge the gap between web2 and web3 experiences.

Bringing 196 million users to web3

The launch represents a push to introduce blockchain technology to Line Messenger's massive user base. By embedding web3 functions into its messaging app, Line is working to lower the barrier to entry for both users and developers. The plan is to build a hybrid ecosystem where traditional web2 users can try decentralized applications without friction.

Ahead of the January launch, Line Next and Kaia released their Dapp Portal SDK in early December 2024. The toolkit is designed to help developers build and optimize applications for the mini-dapp platform.

Developer interest on the rise

Kaia has seen strong interest from developers, with more than 700 projects worldwide planning to build on the Line mini-dapp platform. Some of these are games that already have audiences on Telegram and the TON network. The early momentum suggests the platform could scale quickly after launch.

By adding blockchain-powered games and services to its messaging platform, Line Messenger is positioning itself as a player in the web3 space. The project reflects a broader trend among messaging apps to expand their ecosystems using blockchain technology, creating new value for users while attracting developers.

As January 2025 approaches, Line Messenger's initiative highlights the growing overlap between traditional digital platforms and decentralized technologies, potentially accelerating web3 adoption across Asia and beyond.
