Maneater 2 has been officially revealed during today's PlayStation State of Play, and yes, it's exactly what it sounds like: you're a bull shark loose inside a luxury theme park, and the park is not going to survive.
Developed by Tripwire Interactive and Demiurge Studios, the sequel is targeting a 2027 launch on PS5. The original Maneater dropped in May 2020 and carved out a genuinely fun niche as the self-described "ShaRkPG." Six years later, the follow-up finally has a name, a setting, and a reveal trailer.
Neptune's Kingdom is the perfect disaster waiting to happen
The setting this time is Neptune's Kingdom, an invite-only preview event for an ultra-luxury private island theme park. CEO Victor Reardon pitches it as "your exclusive gateway to the grandeur of Ancient Rome," which is exactly the kind of over-the-top corporate hubris that deserves to be eaten alive. The park blends Las Vegas excess with theme park spectacle, and the whole thing is positioned as a technological and cultural first of its kind.
You play as a new bull shark who finds herself swimming freely inside Neptune's Kingdom, with the same core loop fans remember: eat, explore, and evolve. The goal is escape. The method is chaos.
Bioengineering gone wrong is the whole point
Here's the thing that makes the setting genuinely interesting. Neptune's Kingdom isn't just a regular theme park. Its Marine Research division has been pushing bioengineering hard, creating artificial biomes from across the globe, including arctic and volcanic environments, within a single tropical island. The result is a park teeming with flora and fauna that have no business existing in the same place.
The genetic experimentation doesn't stop there. Low guardrails on mutation research have produced some wild results in the local marine population. The trailer shows the bull shark squaring off against orcas, piranhas, and a crab reportedly described as "the size of a G-Wagon." The implication is that the shark can exploit these same mutation sources to power up, which fits neatly into the evolution system fans already know from the first game.
Chris Parnell is back, and so is the commentary
Trip Westhaven, voiced by Chris Parnell, returns as the shark's sardonic narrator. If you played the original, you know exactly what that means: a running commentary on everything your shark does, delivered with the energy of a nature documentary that has completely lost the plot. Parnell's performance was one of the original game's best qualities, and having him back for the sequel is a smart call.
The world above the waterline is packed with "thought leaders, media luminaries, and over-armed security," which reads like a very specific kind of satire. Below the surface, the food chain has been completely disrupted by submersible human threats and apex predators engineered to dominate. Getting to the top of that chain is the whole game.
What comes next before the 2027 launch
Tripwire and Demiurge have confirmed more news and deep dives are coming before launch, so today's reveal is just the opening bite. The PS5 release window is set for sometime in 2027, with no specific date announced yet.
