Best Mega Rayquaza ex Deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket

The Ruler of the Skies set quietly handed Pokemon TCG Pocket players one of the strongest dragon builds in the game's current meta. Mega Rayquaza ex has become the centerpiece of a deck that solves dragon type's oldest problem: burning through energy faster than you can replace it.

Here's the thing about dragon decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket , they've always hit hard, but the energy cost has historically made them unreliable. The Mega Rayquaza ex build fixes that loop with a specific two-card engine, and the community has been refining it ever since the Ruler of the Skies set dropped.

The card combination that makes this work

The deck's core trick revolves around Dragonair from the Ruler of the Skies set. Every time Mega Rayquaza ex fires off its attack and discards energy in the process, Dragonair sitting on the bench can pull that energy right back from the discard pile. It's a loop that keeps the dragon fed without stalling out mid-game.

Drampa fills a similar support role, just with less raw power behind it. The idea is to have something useful on the field early while Rayquaza charges up on the bench, rather than sending the main attacker in before it's ready.

The full deck list players have been finding success with right now:

Energy split: Fire and Electric.

important
Even with two Dragonair on the bench, you can only recover one energy per turn. That ceiling matters a lot once Rayquaza starts attacking, so timing the switch is everything.

Why the energy type split matters

Dragon types in Pokemon TCG Pocket require a combination of energy types rather than a single color, which is what makes the discard-and-recover loop so valuable here. Rainbow Cave as the stadium card helps smooth out that dual-energy requirement across turns, giving you more flexibility when draws don't line up perfectly.

Cyrus appears as a single copy, which is enough to disrupt opponent setups at the right moment without diluting the core engine. Copycat at 2 copies handles hand replenishment when the deck starts running dry.

The early game problem and how players are handling it

The deck's biggest weakness is the opening few turns. Mega Rayquaza ex needs time to build up energy on the bench, and neither Drampa nor Dragonair are going to win games by themselves. The recommended approach is to use those two as early speed bumps, trading hits and softening up the opponent's bench while Rayquaza charges.

Timing the switch matters more in this deck than almost any other in the current meta. Bring Rayquaza in too early and you waste its potential before the energy loop is established. Bring it in too late and you've already given up too many prize points.

What most players miss is that Rocky Helmet on an early Drampa can actually punish aggressive opponents who swing into it, buying an extra turn or two for Rayquaza to get ready.

Several variations of this deck are circulating, with some builds swapping in Gouging Fire for additional pressure. That version trades some of the consistency of the Dragonair loop for raw early-game power, and it's worth testing if the standard build feels too slow against faster decks in the meta.

The pro tip here: keep Professor's Research in hand until you genuinely need to reset, not as a reflexive early draw. The deck's energy economy is tight enough that burning cards at the wrong moment can stall the whole engine.

For players already deep into the Pokemon universe on mobile, the same strategic thinking that applies here transfers surprisingly well to other titles. Pokémon Pokopia takes a very different approach to the franchise but rewards the same kind of resource management mindset if you're looking for something to complement your TCG sessions.

What the meta looks like around this deck

The Mega Rayquaza ex build has no type weaknesses for opponents to exploit, which is one of dragon's defining advantages in Pokemon TCG Pocket. That alone puts it ahead of several other high-damage builds that can be countered by a well-placed type-advantage deck.

The damage ceiling is genuinely high. Once the energy loop is running and Rayquaza is active, the output can close games fast. The question is always whether you can survive the early game long enough to get there.
