If you own Metro 2033 Redux or Metro Last Light Redux, you're getting a free upgrade this month. 4A Games has confirmed a next-gen update landing October 22 on PC and October 29 on consoles, arriving at a notable moment for the franchise: the Metro series has now sold over 50 million copies worldwide, 16 years after the original Metro 2033 first released.

What the update actually changes

The studio is upfront about what this is and what it isn't. This update preserves the original Metro Redux experience and aesthetic. It's not a remake or a full remaster. What it does add is meaningful: 4K textures across all platforms, improved animations, higher-quality audio, richer environmental detail, and a batch of community-requested bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

On PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S, the update brings native platform support with some platform-specific extras. PS5 Pro players get PSSR support, Xbox Series X gets TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing, and Xbox platforms broadly gain spatial audio. Console players can run both games at native 4K/60fps or upscaled 4K/120fps on compatible displays, with upgraded lighting, shadows, and particle effects thrown in.

Hardware tessellation, displacement mapping, DualSense Adaptive Triggers, and Xbox Impulse Triggers are also part of the package. Xbox players get Play Anywhere support and handheld compatibility on top of that. PC players receive DLSS support alongside spatial audio and quality-of-life fixes.

50 million sales and a franchise with momentum

The timing here is deliberate. Hitting 50 million copies sold is a significant milestone for a franchise that started as a single post-apocalyptic shooter set in the tunnels of a ruined Moscow. The series has grown steadily through Metro Exodus and its expansions, building a reputation for atmosphere-heavy action games that prioritize world-building as much as gunplay.

The next-gen update for Metro Redux isn't just a gift to longtime fans. It's also clearly designed to bring players back into the tunnels before Metro 2039 arrives. The next entry in the series is scheduled for February 4, and 4A Games is building momentum heading into that release.

Metro 2039 is the real destination

Hands-on time with Metro 2039 has left early players floored by what 4A Games has managed to build under genuinely difficult circumstances. The game is described as carrying a crushing sense of claustrophobia and threat that makes previous entries feel almost relaxed by comparison. That's a high bar, given how oppressive the Metro series has always been at its best.

For players who want to revisit the series before 2039 drops, the Metro Exodus guide collection is worth bookmarking if you're planning a full franchise run-up. The free update makes that run easier to justify than ever.
