Nexus Mods announced new AI rules on November 3, making disclosures mandatory and adding content filters while rejecting a blanket ban on AI-generated mods.
AI can feature in mod development in different ways, from script autocompletion to generated textures, voices, and full assets, making it difficult to draw a clear boundary between acceptable and unacceptable use.

Comments on the Nexus Mods announcement show the disagreement behind that approach. Some request a full ban and complain about sorting through AI thumbnails on game mod pages. Others argue that generative AI and AI-assisted coding make mod creation more accessible, and say the new requirements leave them feeling targeted.
Existing mods get a 60-day compliance window
Once the grace period ends, Nexus Mods has outlined an enforcement process:
- Authors will receive notice about missing disclosures or permission settings that need attention.
- They will be asked to correct those issues.
- Continued failure to comply can lead to account restrictions or removal from Nexus Mods.
The stated approach gives authors an opportunity to fix problems before escalating to account penalties. Clear moderation standards are also part of the site's effort to encourage honest disclosure, rather than relying on the upload form alone.
Foledinho says the policy will continue to change as AI technology and its use in modding develop. For help with the installation side of modding, browse the gaming guides.
