Nike's .Swoosh platform has revealed plans to launch "Nike In-Game Wearables," a new line of virtual products designed for use directly inside video games. The move marks a shift in how the company approaches digital fashion, though the exact role of blockchain technology in the initiative remains unclear.

The company's announcement emphasizes that virtual products should center on self-expression and enjoyment rather than purely financial transactions. "It's more about the joy of collecting—of being a true fan—not just a transaction," the company stated.

In-Game Wearables differ from Nike's existing digital collectibles like OF1. Players will buy and equip these items directly within games without needing to manage crypto wallets or blockchain infrastructure. Gamers only need to link their game accounts to access the wearables, making the process more straightforward than previous NFT-based offerings.

Nike has deliberately avoided calling these items NFTs, though the technical implementation remains unspecified. The company entered the blockchain space through its RTFKT acquisition and .Swoosh platform, releasing digital sneaker NFTs on Polygon and collaborating with EA Sports and Fortnite in 2023. But its recent language draws a sharp line between "digital collectibles" and "in-game wearables," suggesting these new items may function differently.

The Fortnite collaboration turned out to be a digital collectibles push without blockchain involvement, leaving the door open for similar non-NFT approaches in future game integrations.

For existing Nike digital collectibles (NFTs), the company will allow owners to transfer items to personal crypto wallets later this year. This enables trading on marketplaces that pay royalties to Nike and its partner artists. But Nike ruled out building its own NFT marketplace, citing concerns that such a project would distract from product creation and storytelling.

The company has not clarified whether In-Game Wearables will use blockchain technology at all, leaving the question open until the products launch. The focus on accessibility and removing crypto wallet requirements suggests Nike may be testing a model that prioritizes ease of use over decentralized ownership.
