Palworld celebrates 850,000 concurrent Steam players after 1.0 launch | GosuGamers

Palworld has done it again. For the second consecutive weekend, Pocketpair's creature-collecting survival game has surged to nearly 1 million concurrent players on Steam, landing second only to Counter-Strike 2 on the platform's most-played charts and pushing Dota 2 down to third place.

The timing matters. Palworld only exited early access on July 10, meaning this player surge is happening in the game's first full weeks as a complete, version 1.0 product. The momentum hasn't faded at all.

What the numbers actually mean

Nearly 1 million concurrent players is a number most games will never sniff. To put it in context, only eight games in Steam's entire history have ever crossed that threshold. Of those, only three have ever broken 2 million concurrents: PUBG, Black Myth: Wukong, and Palworld itself, which peaked at 2.1 million back in early 2024 during its initial early access explosion.

The other five games that have cleared 1 million concurrents are Counter-Strike 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Lost Ark, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. Palworld is keeping company with some of the biggest player numbers in PC gaming history.

Here's the thing that makes this even more striking: Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Lost Ark are all free-to-play. Palworld costs money. Paid games competing at this level against free-to-play titles with years of established player bases is genuinely rare.

The 1.0 effect and what changed

The full release on July 10 brought a significant content overhaul to the game. The 1.0 update added 72 new Pals, a sky island zone, a reworked story, and a breeding mutation system, all of which gave returning players a reason to jump back in and new players a complete experience to start with. You can check out the full breakdown of Palworld 1.0's major changes and additions to see exactly what shipped.

The game is also now available across more platforms than ever. If you're unsure which platforms support Palworld 1.0, the short answer is PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S are all covered.

The Nintendo lawsuit shadow

The road to 1.0 wasn't without turbulence. Nintendo filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in September 2024, targeting three specific patents. As part of a December update, Pocketpair removed the Pokéball-style throwing mechanic for summoning Pals, a direct response to the ongoing legal pressure.

The lawsuit hasn't slowed the player numbers down. Whether the legal situation resolves cleanly or drags on, the audience clearly isn't waiting around for a verdict before jumping in.

With the 1.0 launch behind it and concurrent player counts staying near the top of Steam's charts two weekends running, Pocketpair has turned what started as a viral early access moment into something with genuine staying power. Keep an eye on whether those numbers hold into a third weekend, because that would be the real signal that Palworld's full release has legs beyond the launch window hype. In the meantime, the Palworld guides hub has everything you need if you're jumping in for the first time or returning after a long break.
