San Diego Comic-Con delivered a big one for fighting game fans. During the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls , Behind the Battle panel, Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka confirmed Phoenix Cyclops as the first additional character coming to Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls as part of the Year 1 content plan.

Scott Summers, but make it cosmic

This isn't the clean-cut, visor-wearing field commander most X-Men fans grew up with. The version of Cyclops heading to the roster draws directly from his Phoenix Five incarnation in Avengers vs. X-Men, the storyline where Scott Summers became one of five mutants to absorb a fragment of the Phoenix Force. The result is a visually distinct fighter who blends his signature Optic Blasts and hand-to-hand combat with the raw, fiery energy of a cosmic entity.

Ray Chase handles the voice work, and Arc System Works has teased that the Phoenix Force will factor meaningfully into his gameplay kit. The full breakdown of his moveset and mechanics is still coming, but the implication is clear: this Cyclops hits different.

Phoenix Cyclops is the first of multiple characters planned under the Year 1 content roadmap. Arc System Works has confirmed new stages and additional updates are also in the pipeline following launch.

An anime opening and a rock soundtrack

The SDCC panel dropped more than just a character reveal. Arc System Works also unveiled the game's anime opening movie, produced by Japanese animation studio Sanzigen, the same team known for pushing 2.5D animation into impressive territory. The opening pulls from classic fighting game tradition while channeling the energy of early-2000s anime intros.

The theme song features dual vocals from Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA and mayu of NEMOPHILA, two iconic figures in Japanese rock. Lyrics were written by Kanata Okajima, with composition and arrangement by MEG (MEGMETAL). Animation direction came from Daisuke Suzuki of Sanzigen, who is apparently a Marvel fan himself. You can feel that in the final product.

Insomniac collaboration costumes and what's free

Yamanaka also confirmed a collaboration with Insomniac Games that brings costumes inspired by the Wolverine universe to the roster. The Wolverine Battle Reborn Suit arrives on September 1 and will be available to all players at no cost. Players who pick up the Ultimate Edition already have access to a costume based on the Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Arc System Works acknowledged that alternate costumes have historically been limited in their titles. With Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, that approach is changing. Costume development is now a deliberate part of the post-launch content strategy, with more variety planned across future updates.

Open Beta runs July 24 to 26

The timing of all these reveals is no accident. The Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Open Beta kicks off today, July 24, and runs through July 26 on PS5 and PC. Here's the thing: the playable roster just got a surprise addition. Green Goblin was not originally part of the Open Beta lineup, but Arc System Works expanded the roster to 16 characters ahead of the test period.

This is the last free shot at the game before launch, so if you're on the fence, now is the time to find out whether the team-based battle system clicks for you. Check out the full roster guide to see every confirmed character and what the Year 1 pass adds going forward.

Phoenix Cyclops is only the beginning of the post-launch content roadmap. With new characters, stages, and costumes all confirmed as part of the Year 1 plan, the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls guides hub will keep you up to date as each new addition gets detailed.
