Pillars of Eternity Turn-Based Mode Beta Info

Obsidian Entertainment is bringing a significant update to Pillars of Eternity. The studio announced that a public beta for a new turn-based combat mode will launch on November 5, giving players the chance to try a fresh approach to the game’s tactical encounters. A trailer accompanied the announcement, offering a first look at how combat will function in this new format.

Originally released in 2015, Pillars of Eternity is a party-based tactical RPG designed around real-time combat with pause - a system that defined the game’s strategic pacing. The addition of turn-based gameplay represents one of the biggest changes the title has received since launch. It also reflects how turn-based combat has grown in popularity in the RPG genre, particularly following the success of games like Baldur’s Gate 3.

Changes Based on Community Feedback

According to Obsidian, the new mode pulls from lessons learned when Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire introduced its own turn-based option. This updated version is meant to offer smoother pacing and deeper impact from player decisions.

Turn order is now influenced by each character’s speed. This change highlights attributes that previously mattered more in real-time scenarios. Obsidian also adjusted how actions like switching weapons or using potions function. These are now classified as free actions but are limited to one per turn for each type of action in order to maintain balance.

Combat pacing has also been adjusted. Encounters are designed to feel more decisive, with damage output increased for both players and enemies so battles resolve more quickly.

Full Flexibility Between Modes

A key part of the update is how accessible the new mode is. Turn-based combat can be selected at the beginning of a new campaign, but players are not locked into that choice. The option to switch between real-time with pause and turn-based mode is available at any point from the game’s settings menu.

Obsidian mentioned that it is exploring the possibility of a UI toggle to make switching modes even faster and more convenient. Obsidian has not provided an end date for the beta. The studio plans to continue updating the feature until it is ready to become a permanent part of the game.

The Future of Pillars of Eternity

Josh Sawyer, director of both Pillars of Eternity games, recently discussed the direction of a potential Pillars of Eternity 3. While not officially in development, Sawyer noted that any future installment would likely move toward a fully 3D presentation influenced in part by the reception and impact of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Obsidian continues to expand the world of Pillars of Eternity beyond these updates. Earlier this year, the studio released Avowed, an action RPG that takes place in the same universe. Though a different genre, it reinforces Obsidian’s commitment to the setting and may influence how future entries evolve.
