Sony released PS5 firmware update 26.07-14.22.00 on November 2, 2026, adding security fixes as jailbreak efforts continue ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6. The 1.267 GB download is available now, arriving less than two weeks after the console's previous system update.
Sony's patch notes contain a single entry: “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.”
A September jailbreak brought PS5 Pro into range
The security update follows a significant expansion in PS5 jailbreak support. In late September, a jailbreak covering firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60 became available across PS5 models, including PS5 Pro. At that point, even consoles that had gone roughly a week without an update could fall within the supported range, making the release relevant to more than owners holding onto much older hardware.
Jailbreaking bypasses restrictions on a PS5 so that it can run unauthorized software. That includes homebrew applications and emulators, but it can also create opportunities for game piracy. Those different uses explain why console modification attracts both enthusiasts interested in experimenting with their hardware and scrutiny over software protection.
Newer firmware soon became part of the picture:
- Firmware 14.00 became necessary for downloading updates to some PS5 games. That requirement pushed jailbreak research toward newer system software rather than leaving the September release as a lasting solution.
- Firmware 14.20 arrived on October 21. Its patch notes did not identify security fixes, unlike today's release, although it landed during the same period of increased activity around PS5 exploits.
For a modified PS5, that creates a practical trade-off. Staying on an exploitable firmware version can preserve access to a jailbreak while leaving the console below the version required for a particular game's updates. The requirements of individual games therefore matter alongside the firmware versions that researchers have managed to open up.
GTA 6's November 19 launch adds pressure
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Rockstar Games has not announced its minimum PS5 firmware requirement. That remains a separate launch detail from the controller and audio capabilities covered in the GTA 6 PS5 features guide.
The protection of PS5 releases also matters beyond Rockstar's next game. Publishers and developers depend on Sony's platform security to protect their software, which gives the company a reason to address vulnerabilities regardless of which release happens to be approaching. GTA 6 makes that existing responsibility particularly visible.
Public jailbreak releases are only one route for PS5 security discoveries. A hacker privately reported an exploit to Sony and received a $50,000 reward.
